Survey Says: Sony May Have Shown One Of Their Cards…

April 16th, 2009 at 5:00 pm · 9 Comments

gow3_surveySony sent out a survey yesterday asking people what they’d like to see included in a Collector’s Edition of God Of War III.  This isn’t necessarily news as a lot of developers ask people what they’d really like to see.  Collector’s Edition pack-ins cost “real” money and if the guys are going to go through the trouble to pick something, it’s reasonable to make sure it’s something people will actually want.

Keep reading to see why I’m excited at one of their survey points…

Sure, the survey listed the typical offerings you’d expect, a trinket, a collectible figure, a t-shirt, an art book, a sound track, etc.  Any one of those would look at home in a Collector’s Edition of a game, but there was one item they asked about that immediately piqued my curiosity and that was God of War I/II on Blu-Ray.  What?!  PS2 games don’t come on Blu-ray discs and most PS3s can’t play PS2 games.

What this means, is that Sony is considering one of two things…  The first thing this might mean would be porting both games over to the PS3 which in my opinion is a pretty monumental task to take two full sized games written for another platform and port them to the PS3.  The second thing this might mean (which coincidentally seems the most likely and the most important) is that Sony has a PS2 emulation solution of their sleeves.  Even if it’s only hand tuned to run God of War I & II, that’s got to be a massive start on general PS2 emulation on the PS3.  If you ask me, even if people didn’t use it as much as they’d have you believe, is made of pure win.

While I think the capability of playing previous gen software is much more widely sought after than actually used, if they were able to bring it back, I can’t think of a grander way to announce and release it than starting with arguably two of the best games to ever grace the PS2.  Sure, it’s another “added value” and no replacement for a price drop, but realistically… how much lower can the PS2 ever go?  It took a 25% price cut going from $129 to $99.  I don’t think it’ll ever get any cheaper than $99.  Could this be the beginning of the last hurrah of the PS2, allowing Sony to feel they’re not cannibalizing their own sales by offering PS2 backwards compatibility on the PS3?  It’s hard to say, but it’s not very unreasonable if you ask me…

What do you think?  Sound off.  Would you buy a Collector’s Edition of GOW III for say $20-$30 extra if it also included GOW I & II playable on any PS3?  I’m pretty sure I would…  I’d also breathe a sigh of relief if/when my 60GB launch PS3 ever needs to be repaired.  There are already rumors circulating that Sony doesn’t want to repair those models anymore.

I don’t have them.. I’ve just recently become a fan of the GoW series because of the GoW:COO. I would love to have 1 & 2 packed with gow3

I’ll pay even more than 100usd if they include GoW 1&2 I don´t care about the format or PS2 emulation whatever but just include that two fuckin awesome games in the GoW3 SE

That Collector’s Edition would be ungodly expensive.

Yeah I took the survey and definitely 10′d that. I know that its a very popular series but I know alot of people (myself included, my first was on psp) who didn’t get into god of war straight away. This would be a great way to show people why it matters.

Another choice was a cinematics BD from I and II, which would be pretty cool too

I don’t have them either, and I am interested in GoW 3. I would love it if this would happen, I tried to buy the two prequels on Amazon when they had them in their Gold Box deals, but was too slow.

I’d love it if i could play GoW1, 2 and 3 all on my ps3 as my ps2 recently broke and I’m not going to buy a new one to play older games and I would put down an extra £15 – £25 for the 3 games rather than just buy the 3rd one as I never played God of War 1 or 2 as i was a bit young when they came out to buy them (of course i still wanted to play them)
