I play games, I don’t know if you gathered this from the website you’re reading (truth is; I did apply to write for Knitting Emporium Monthly first but they told me my work wasn’t quite edgy enough). I also enjoy reading about games, partially to know what to play, and partially because it often makes me pleasantly surprised.
Today; often became definitely.
The Saboteur is being made by Pandemic who you might know from the Mercenaries series and the Star Wars: Battlefront games (also, other stuff, duh) and that’s already enough for me to bat an eyelid, Mercs is a guilty pleasure of mine, it’s… never particularly good, but it’s exactly the type of game I like to play once in a while; fun, but not particularly thought engaging (Following this criteria is how I ended up with a few of my ex-girlfriends).
Learn more (about The Saboteur, not my deviant attempts at finding women) after the break:
The title relates to the protagonist Sean Devlin who in a shocking display of correlation is a saboteur. Not even just a saboteur, in fact he is probably history’s foremost badass, information states that previous to messing a bitch up professionally, he was once a race car driver. The game being somewhat loosely based in modern history and his character being based on a real person has made me at least to consider a new way of earning my living (By day I write about videogames, but by night I drive around in a sweet car and do things that prevent other people doing things).
Set in Paris during Nazi installation, you’re part of an insurgence group whose goal is to make things marginally less comfortable for those that threaten upheaval to the staunch, hard working nation of France (I write for a website called Sarcastic Gamer, I am employing this tool here). The developers are quick to point out however that the game is “not about the war, it’s about Sean”, but really, the game is not about him either, it’s about a lovely and interesting aesthetic.
Saboteur’s art style lends much to Sin City in that sizeable parts of the game are almost entirely in black and white, so far so MadWorld. But what really sets it apart is that as you move around the city doing good, the parts of it that are less occupied by Nazis (a euphemism I’m using for “you’ve shot them all”) have more colours bleeding through. The idea being that the colour represents the area’s “will to fight”, and as you show the people in the area how to not back down, they are happier and less likely to put up with German occupation.
I am interested in playing this game now. Congratulations Pandemic, you’ve proved that I can be won over by interesting visuals and a main character that seems like a pretty cool guy.
The Saboteur is due to be released later this year.

Interesting. I think I’d heard of this awhile back, but lost sight of it. That’s an interesting mechanic with the color.
So:
Sandbox environment GTA4+ WWII+ Madworld color scheme…wait, no zombies?
Anyway, thanks for putting this back on the radar.
Nice.
Thank you Mr. Pillowfort. This sounds like a highly interesting concept. A WWII game that’s not a shooter. It does look cool.
It’s FRANCE… isn’t “will to fight” kinda pointless?
-just kidding, guys…
Man that’s a joke I wish I’d thought of actually.
Nice!
