The upcoming Star Trek MMO, being developed by Cryptic Studios, has its sights set on providing fans with a Star Trek experience never before possible. I challenge anyone who grew up on Star Trek to deny that playing in a massive online universe based on Star Trek would not be cool (if it is done right).

However, with the game taking place roughly 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, it seemed unlikely that die hard fans of the many Star Trek TV shows would have a chance to play as their favorite characters, chief among them the famous Captains. Luckily, Cryptic has just announced a special feature which will allow you to do just that, and allow fanboys all over the world to prove, once and for all, who the greatest Captain of all time really is!

Found out all the details after the jump!

Cryptic announced today that a special mode will be included with the game upon release, which will allow gamers to pick their favorite Star Trek Captain/Commander and battle it out one on one, mano a mano, for the right to be called greatest Star Trek Captain ever!

The mode will be separate from the core game and will not affect online progression, stats, equipment or rating, but it is a nice touch. What true Star Trek fan hasn’t heard a “Kirk is better than Picard” or “Janeway is better than Sisko” argument about a million times?

Given the drastically different ships associated with the characters, it makes sense that this mode will be a third-person action fighter rather than a ship vs. ship simulation. So far only four characters have been confirmed: Commander Sisko, Captain Janeway, Captain Kirk and my hero, Captain Picard!

Commander Sisko’s character has the ability to confuse his opponents with all sorts of gibberish about being a prophet, as well as the tactical advantage of not having any hair to get in his way when fighting. He also has the ability to call on Jake, his son, to block attacks and generally get in his opponents way. Best of all, since phasers are not permitted, he is allowed to carry a baseball bat.

Captain Janeway has a trick or two up her sleeve as well. Her massive beehive hairdew conceals both a one use health boost and a set of brass knuckles. Her signature ‘make babies cry’ voice can be used to stun opponents and her ability to “nag” allows for a possible auto-surrender from adversaries if the right counter is not performed.

Captain Kirk can call on three hot alien triplets who can block attacks and distract foes. He also has the ability to switch between several of his classic uniforms, stunning enemies with their garish brilliance. Best of all, he has a one hit kill move that, while almost impossible to complete every time, has no counter. If you hear him scream “KHAN!” your already dead.

Last but certainly not least we have Captain Picard. Like Sisko, he has no hair to get in his way. His special weapons include a bottle of Côtes-du-rhône, which he can smash over an enemies head and the ability to cry without looking like a sissy. As the oldest captain he does not have the strongest attacks, or the most special of abilities, but he does have a large amount of health and armour. No matter what you do, Picard is going to one tough bastard to break. “There…are…four…lights!”

I was already pretty excited about Star Trek Online before today’s announcement. Now I am freaking out! Picard FTW! Let those two handed uppercuts fly!
