This is a story I never thought that I would have to write. The idea has popped into my head before, but I never actually thought that a studio would be brave enough to tackle a “Shadow of the Colossus” movie. Of course, if this rumor is true, then I only have two questions: when does production begin and when can I purchase a ticket?
Unfortunately, I can’t answer either question. Though, I do have some tasty nuggets to pass along.
The story was first reported by Steven Zeitchik and Borys Kit of the Risky Biz Blog, who claimed that Sony Pictures is prepping a film based on the 2005 adventure title. Ben Fritz, a writer for Variety, subsequently supported the gossip with a story of his own.
According to both reports, Justin Marks, a friend of Fritz, will undertake the monumental task of preparing a script. I have absolutely no clue who Justin Marks is, but, apparently, he also penned the “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li” script. I ignored that film like The Black Death, but I read that it was a commercial and critical flop. I pray, for his sake, that Marks doesn’t disappoint me. Otherwise, I might have to fly to his house and kick his teeth in.
If the film is indeed in production, then it is but one of many game-to-film adaptations that gamers can expect in the near future. Following the release of the latest “Street Fighter” film, Capcom confirmed films based on the “Onimusha,” “Clock Tower” and “Lost Planet” IPs. Gore Verbinski (”Pirates of the Caribbean”) will helm the upcoming “BioShock” flick, Len Wiseman (”Underworld,” “Live Free or Die Hard”) will direct the “Gears of War” adaptation, and Universal Pictures will reportedly release a film based on Electronic Art’s “Dante’s Inferno.” Ubisoft is also looking into an “Assassin’s Creed” movie.
While this is certainly exciting news, it is important to remember that Sony has yet to confirm the project. Even if the rumor is true, the film might never release. Remember that “Halo” movie? Probably never going to come out.
“Shadow of the Colossus” is easily one of my favorite games of all time. I realize that game-to-film adaptations usually suck, but I can’t help but be excited. Though, I do wonder how well the story will transfer to the big screen. Would the main character simply go around killing a bunch of giants? Certainly a cool concept for a game, but I doubt Sony could base an entire movie on it. Most likely, the film would focus on Wander’s relationships with the mysterious, incapacitated female and his horse, Agro.
“Shadow of the Colossus” was an emotional game that forced players to interpret what was unfolding before their eyes. Team ICO crafted a plot that was light on details, which forced gamers to fill in the gaps. If a film is indeed in production, I only hope that it is as equally profound.

Just bring me a downloadable PS3 co-op Shadow of the Collosus and nobody will get hurt… and keep Ewe Boll away from this movie.
Don’t forget the Donny Darko Prince of Persia movie!
Good call bbqfox. Forgot about that one. I believe its coming out April 2010. Don’t have high hopes for it, but it could turn out alright.
Ooh, I know I shouldn’t cause I know game-to-film adaptations usually suck, as well as the next guy but I can’t help but be excited by the news of all these movies coming out. I think Shadow of the Colossus has the potential to make a great movie (if done right) and I would LOVE to see them lock down that Assassin’s Creed movie.
