Rumor-smash: Netflix staying on 360 “for now”

Lazy re-use of images? Me? Never!

Oh well. So much for getting our hopes up. Netflix has smashed the recent rumor that they’re planning a streaming service for consoles other than the 360 with a simple confirmation that the service is remaining exclusive to Microsoft’s machine. For now.

For now? Hurray! But for now. Aw. Read about it over the jump.

The day-old rumour appeared, well, a day ago following a job posting made by Netflix: the listing was asking for somebody with “deep experience developing and testing media rich applications on current generation gaming consoles”. Sounds good, right?

Yup, it sounds sweet. Shame it has no intention of happening, if uncle Netflix is to be believed. Speaking to EDGE, a spokesman said that “for now, Netflix streaming on game consoles is exclusively on the Xbox 360″. It’s true; 1.5 billion minutes of TV and movies have been streamed to 360s since the service launched in November last year.

That’s 25 million hours. Just over one million days. 20,000 weeks. 385 years. And a whole lotta useless statistics.

As for bringing Netflix to other parts of the world? That’s out of the question too, and not even “for now”. “Netflix is available in the U.S. only,” came the very flat, very distinct reply.

International availability being swept aside for now, what sort of denial is “for now”? It’s essentially “it’s not coming out right now, sure, but it is coming.” In other words, it’s a denial we don’t even need to be denied, or something.

Which, truth be told, makes this rumor-smash less of a rumor-smash and more of a rumor-dampening-and-a-little-bit-of-confirmation-instead, or something equally as catchy. The question now is not whether Netflix begins a rollout of its service to other consoles, but when.

And when will it be? This year? Next year? Sometime after we’re all dead and gone? The job posting is all but a confirmation that something’s happening, and this padding at the end of this otherwise-brief article wants to know when.

Of course, if you’re a PS3 or a Wii owner, would you use Netflix? The answer’s probably yes. But don’t tell this last piece of article filler.

I hardly use it on the 360 anyways. Apparently a connection that’s good enough to game is hardly a good enough connection to watch anything in SD let alone HD… At least on the PC you can let your video load and then watch it when it’s ready. Why can’t the 360 do that?

    • What? I’ll let you live “for now”. “For now” it is 6:51pm PDT… “FOR NOW” I have not recorded Ep 49 of SG-Blu…

      Dude…”FOR NOW” does not smash a rumor…

“FOR NOW” it is Wednesday… LOL

microsoft? not sharing? that’s not old news the faggots do it all the time! and when sony gets something actually decent for their console it gets copied. microsoft is a lot like the weirdo kid from school who always wanted he’s own way then threw temper tantrums if he didn’t!

ofc they can’t confirm anything before launch…
One of the big selling points of the 360 at the moment is the Netflix deal!
If they told the world “it will be coming to PS3 in about.. 4 months”, Microsoft would sell less.

and “for now” is never a rumor-smash…
