Yes, folks, it’s a slow news day. You can now download a digital Pong clock to your Xbox 360.
Doesn’t that sound exciting?! Riveting coverage over the jump…
Ping Time, as the “game” is called, is a 1080p optimised digital clock that tells the time using Pong scores. As the two bats hit the ball back and forth, they’ll score against each other as the minutes or hours increment. And that’s it. That’s all there is to it.
There’s no cheat codes, no special features, no sound; just silence as your black-and-white tennis bats scroll back and forth, evermore competing as they tell the time. Well, until you get bored and go play Left 4 Dead, anyway.
When you think about it, Ping Time isn’t really a game as such. It’s more of a novelty application, a bit like the News & Weather Channels on the Wii, or the PS3’s Life With PlayStation. It was created merely on a whim late one night by a community developer for the funnies, and that’s that.
But it does clear the way for non-gaming applications on the 360 in the future. Could you see yourself using your 360 to check up the news, or surf the internet, if such a facility was offered? If I were a 360 owner, I’d be a little curious about what the community developers cough up in the near future, even if all there is now is a pointless Pong clock.
Ping Time is out now for 200 Microsoft Points (about $2.50/£1.70) in the Community Games section of the Marketplace.

Are they seriously gonna charge?
It’s actually worse than if they charged extra for color.
