Demigod is only a week away now and I can hardly wait. It’s being published by Stardock, who I respect and admire a lot from their work with Galactic Civilizations and Sins of a Solar Empire, and is being developed by Gas Powered Games, who created one of my top three favorite PC RTS titles of all time, Supreme Commander. Chris Taylor and Brad Wardell kick ass, I’m just saying. Could it get possibly get any better?
Find out just what has me so amped for this game after the jump!
Set to be released on April 14th, Demigod has been on my radar for a long time. Putting aside for a moment my appreciation for the companies involved, what I have seen and read about the game so far really does inspire a great deal of confidence. This walkthrough of what the Rook can do for example.
What I think has drawn my attention the most is that Demigod is trying something new with the RTS and RPG genres. It incorporates real-time strategy with a lot of the conventions you would normally associate with a role-playing game…above and beyond the now standard, but limited, “hero” units we have seen in other RTS games.
Much more than simple heroes, the Demigods you can play as in the game come with truly unique abilities and absolutely incredible powers. Your demigod gains levels, grows in power, unlocks mighty artifacts, raises armies and even goes toe to toe with other Demigods for a chance to become a true god and take its place in the Pantheon. Now that might not sound THAT unique, but trust me, it’s all in the execution, as this walkthrough clearly shows.
It brings to mind something I often thought about when playing the Black & White games; I wished there was a game where I really was playing as a god and could battle it out against other deities and their minions in more than a limited, kiddy fashion. Well, now there is just such a game.
The different types of Demigods, Assassin and General, is a nice touch, but also a simple (for lack of a better word) one that I like. Dumbing it down, Assassin demigods are more about hunting down other demigods, whereas Generals are more in line with standard RTS gameplay, focused on holding ground and command.
I could just rehash all the previews and interviews that already abound, but I’ll just say this: Your playing a game where you control a demigod who wants to be a full fledged god. Your insanely powerful and as the game progresses, you’ll become even MORE insanely powerful, all the while enjoying the tactical appeal of an RTS, mixed with the character progression and upgrades of an RPG, displayed in breathtaking detail, built by two of the best PC gaming companies today. What the hell else do you need to know?

Wow, I’m intrigued! I’ve never even heard of this game. Great post PMPB, I’ll have to look into this one a bit more.
I’ve been looking forward to this for months now. This and MW2 are the only games I’m looking forward to this year. 2009 is really not pulling its weight.
When i heard this game was going to be made by the guys who made Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander i knew i wanted it right away^^

I have to say, you got me very excited for a game I hadn’t heard a thing about. Then I realized that that this was not some wonderous PS3 exclusive, but intead a PC game. That is when my new found hopes were dashed. I do not do PC gaming. Not because I’m console biased, but simply because my computer is 8 years old (with no upgrades) and I don’t have the money for a new one.
Fantastic article. It was a roller-coaster read. Well done, Sir.
