Is Sony too late (again) with the PSP 2?

You can make the argument that the next PSP will pack more RAM or processing or 1.21 jigawatts of graphics power.  I don’t think it will really matter.

The iPhone and iPod touch are carving out such deep trenches in mobile gaming, and the new DS is getting so much default-love, that I’m afraid Sony may have waited a year too long to hit with their next handheld console.  Remind you of any other marketing plans-gone-awry?
I’m sure it’s going to be quite popular when the PSP2 hits shelves (allegedly by Christmas -Pocket Gamer-) but by then there will be another 5 million iPhones in circulation grabbing an enormous share of the critical “casual”(sorry Croal, Tourist) market.  I just don’t think there’s much of a chance of the Playstation store beating iTunes, or of iPhone owners packing an additional device when they have almost limitless games at their fingertips on a service they already know.

Unless…  UNLESS….. The PSP2….. is a Phone.

Think about it and get back to me.  Even with that it may be too late.

According to Pocket Gamer, the official PSP2 announcement is coming at E3 in June.

It’s too late, nothing can compete with the iPhone.

It’s scary how quickly the install base and app store are growing nowadays. It’s even scarier to think about how it’s still picking up steam and thinking about what’s going to happen when the updated version comes out in June with the 3.0 software that pretty much erases any complaints people have with the phone.

The iPhone is the new RAZR, it’s that simple. Sony would have no chance with a competing cell phone/gaming device. The Sony fan boys aren’t THAT loyal to make that mistake again. :-P

    • @yousty: You and Doc are right that the PSP2 has no chance against the iPhone, but that’s like saying it also has no chance against the iPod as a music player. You’re putting it in the wrong fight… the PSP2 has EVERY CHANCE to outdo the iPhone as a portable gaming system. Will it have more content? No, not with the cattle call that is the iPhone App Store, but I’d put money on the PSP2 offering things not possible on the iPhone even if only limited by the interface.

See my article that just went live for more details.

Also, the PSP2 will never outdo Norelco’s latest electric razor… it’s going to be a slaughter!

I do not think its to late. If you consider what the PSP is, it is a gaming and multimedia device. The iPhone is a phone with gaming and multimedia. I think anyone who wants to game will buy a psp. The depth of games goes far deeper than the iPhone. Once they add a second analog stick, and more ways to connect. Its obviously going to have bluetooth, and possible 3g. Its capabilities are going to be on a different level than the iPhone. The iPhone is great for what it is. The psp is great though, and its connectivity to the ps3 will have more capabilities, which I like. I expect people will find more and more uses for this. And if you look at the ps3 it did come out later, but its highest quality console you can buy. No issues with rrod, its starting to mass a great software selection. Ps3 is starting to show its worth. The PSP 2 is going to come out, on the right track.

I guess you guys have been so distraught with the lack of quality and games the 360 offers, you decided to spend your game time worrying about the fun systems.

It’s ok Doc if you want you can trade in your 360 and maybe afford a PSP :)

Although I must warn you, you’ve never seen innovation like in the PSP and coming from a 360 to a PSP might be too much of a step up for you. Maybe you should buy a Wii or a DS first ok?

      @rothbart
I completely agree with the article you just posted.

I was commenting solely in response to Doc’s article about how it would be an astronomical failure for Sony to try and enter the gaming device/phone market.

since PSP is a far superior gaming device to the iPhone, i would have to guess that PSP2 will also be superior. name 1 iPhone game that even remotely compares to Chains of Olympus. seriously. Crisis Core? MGS Portable Ops? Jeanne d’Arc? i don’t even know why ppl compare these 2 products.

Right now is the time for Sony to announce the PSP2 and show it around a bit. It’s the time to take away the spotlight of off the DSi and iPhone. Otherwise, once people one of the above-mentioned gadgets, it just might be too late!
