I’m trying to make a big deal out of this so maybe other PS3 developers will take note that people LIKE having the option of using mouse control in games where it makes sense. TikGames and Creat Studios have announced updates to their first three PSN offerings, but Mahjong Tales will also be receiving (amongst other features and new tile layouts) mouse support. Mouse support for a Mahjong game. It seems like such a no brainer, yet it didn’t launch with mouse support. The only PS3 game I can think of that launched with mouse support was Unreal Tournament 3.
Developers, read on to find out why you SHOULD make this a trend…I like to think I have a decent insight into the Playstation community myself and this morning I was chatting with Torgo from the Playstation Nation Podcast and I mentioned the upcoming mouse support patch. I could see in the IM window that he was typing something back, but I was already onto my next comment.
When I pressed Enter, both of our messages popped up and we both commented that Lemmings should be patched to have mouse support… and it should! After falling for Lemmings once on the original Playstation, I vowed not to play it again without a mouse. Apparently, I’m not alone.
Think of all the casual games you play on a PC. Virtually all of them use mouse input. Why aren’t developers (sometimes of the very same games) adding in optional mouse support? In full sized games I understand Sony wants to push for SIXAXIS support and/or rumble which cannot be replicated with a mouse/keyboard setup for FPS games, but in the PSN/Casual game market… it just makes sense.
I’m hoping that just as we saw games launching then getting trophy patches later, or launching and getting custom soundtrack support later… I’m hoping this will be the start of a trend that will become the norm. If we’re getting Bejeweled 2 on the PS3… give us optional mouse support. If we’re getting Zuma, give us optional mouse support. If we’re getting more card games, give us optional mouse support. If we’re getting FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS… GIVE US OPTIONAL MOUSE/KEYBOARD SUPPORT!
There… I think I got out what I was trying to say…

Will not work for FPS’s. Anybody who’s a dual PC/Console gamer can confirm that Mouses will absolutely screw over Controllers and since making a separate M/K gamemodes/playlists takes ’so much effort’ , devs actively remove it for the sake of balance.
Apparently that’s the reason why RA3 for PS3 didn’t have it.
All it takes is a filter in matchmaking… mouse only, controller only, or doesn’t matter.
I’ve wondered why they haven’t done this, yet. That is all it would really take is a filter of some sort, or a different lobby of sorts. There just seems to be this sanctity of the console that it can’t get over the bridge of the controller because somehow it would ruin one, or the other. It’s obvious that sooner, rather then later, PC’s and consoles are going to merge in one way or another. The reluctance to do so as of yet, is surprising.
Good comparison of Mose with Mouses. And you said How Important of a Mouse is
Even the Atari 2600 in the 1980’s had different controllers, Joystick as a default and Scrollers to be sold separately for games such as Atari Circus. I realize the online matter didn’t exist, but I’m just saying that even back then on such a relatively simple console you had a choice.
sound like a good idea , i know alot of people that are pc gamers that are close to buying a ps3 but are waiting for this,
I play most FPS and RTS titles on PC. Other games work better on console for me. I really want to see this. Over the last 6 months I’ve been questioning why there is no mouse and keyboard support for games and not just the dashboard.
It’ll also let me proove once and for all that mouse trumps controller in FPS and RTS titles. MUHAHAHAAW! I should pick up UT3…
I have a PS3 but i havent bought any FPS games because of this. I dont enjoy them, they were meant to be played with mouse and keyboard. So until they are supported I will not buy any fps game for ps3. I have been wanting to play resistance for a very long time but the way it was meant to be played. Also as everyone knows theres third party hardware that allows anyone to use M&K and many more of them are buying it. This brings unbalance to the game for ppl with controllers all they need to do I patch it allow it and then just filter it that way they can control it but the way ppl are playin with 3rd party hardware can not be controled.
Add me to the “not buying any FPS games until there’s mouse support” camp.
The only reason I currently even own a PS3 is for the driving games.
I play alot of FPS games, and would love to buy most of them for the PS3, but am stuck with my PC for now.
I didn’t whine way back when because everyone was smoking me on Unreal Tournament when it first came out.
My PC would handle Doom/Quake fine, but UT really taxed it’s video card and processor.
I got smoked until I could afford to buy a new computer to play them competitively.
If people are constantly outplaying you because their controllers are better….upgrade.
I CAN play light gun games with the controller.
I CAN play driving games with the controller.
I CHOOSE to play gun games with a gun, and driving games with a wheel/pedal combo because they work better.
If you want to play your Playstation 3 with a mouse just get the FragFX and use it until/if mouse support starts to be common. It works fairly well, especially with FPS games.
