Grips beware: don't make a Big Daddy upset!

Universal pictures announced yesterday that production has been halted on the latest Gore Verbinski project, a film adaptation of the multi-platform hit shooter of 2007, Bioshock (2K Boston/2K Australia). How does this affect our favorite city-under-the-sea’s chances to make it to the silver screen? Find out after the jump!

With budget cuts being common in many industries lately, Hollywood is no different. The film is still in pre-production, which means a lot of budget estimates, casting, and hiring crew. When the estimated budget began to escalate over $160 million USD, Verbinski and Universal decided to explore options for reducing the production cost, including moving the filming location from Los Angeles to the UK in order to take advantage of tax breaks.

“We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit,” Verbinski said. “We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern.”

So what does this mean for fans anticipating the movie, and gaming movies in general? While cutbacks and delays are generally viewed negatively, from a business perspective this is probably a good thing. Hollywood provides entertainment to make money. If the studios can find a way to cut budget costs without sacrificing production value (good CGI effects, etc.), the more potential the movie has to make money. If the studio makes money on a video game film, we can expect that others will be expected to follow.
