A Killzone 2 Rant: Get out of the doorway!

badass

A month later and I’m still hooked on Killzone 2. Since its release I’ve heard a lot of fanboy’s gushing over the game, making it sound perfect (which it is not). I’ve heard a like number of haters making overblown criticisms of a game most of them haven’t played for more than an hour, if ever.

For me, Killzone 2 is one of the very best games available on the PS3. That said, I have more than a few bones to pick with both the game itself, and the stooges I hunt online.

Yo, peep da rest of dis ere Killzone 2 rant after da bounce, aight?

My love of Killzone 2’s single player campaign is well documented, so we will skip that as a topic of discussion. After a month, Killzone 2 is resting on its multiplayer laurels, and doing great. Of course great is not awesome. To become awesome it (the devs and players)  still needs to address some freaking irritating, but totally addressable, issues with its multiplayer.

I dig the squad and clan system in Killzone 2’s multiplayer. It may not be the best for the super casual or the loner types, but when you have a bunch of friends or clan-mates around, wooo boy, it’s wicked. Too bad players are still getting disconnected, not from the PSN, but from Killzone online, often enough that it pisses people off. Clan matches resulting in a draw regardless of the score doesn’t help either. This has happened to our clan twice now.

Now that the game has been out awhile, you can expect to encounter any class in a particular match. For the most part, the diversity is reasonably constant, minus the occasional Pyrrhus Rise sniper fest and what I call “rocket mania.” I don’t get upset when I see a ton of snipers on Pyrrhus, simply because it IS the best sniper map available. Rocket mania on the other hand is really starting to piss me off. Yeah, I know, every game has “that” weapon someone inevitably complains about; “Overpowered,” “cheap” etc…

The thing about the rocket launchers is that they really do kick ass. So much so that the minute more than two people start rocking rockets, everyone else starts rocking rockets too! It’s a damn rocket rockout rock’a'thon…with rockets! Which sucks.

More than anything else, I hate people who stand in doorways. One time, ok, heat of battle, I’ll let it slip. Second time, you know what, nobody is perfect. The third time I team kill your punk ass and dance a jig. Seriously, even though the problem of not being able to get by players blocking doorways is not new in FPS titles, am I the only one that noticed it a lot more in Killzone 2?

Oh, and before I forget, if you choose a medic, HEAL PEOPLE for the love of all that rocks rockets!

Team killing? Fair enough in that context. But a JIG? Dancing a FREAKING JIG? That’s just a step too far, PMPB… :)

Depends how good your jigging is.

putting the jig aside for a moment..

I know what you mean, it turns ever thing into a cluster f**k …

Those that hand out in doorways is the way a player controls his character cannot be addressed by Guerilla, but some things can be.

For KZ2 to continue to mature and stay relevant, a party system really needs to be included. I understand the squad option, but players are not using it enough or still do not understand it and the clan system is a good idea, but a PARTY SYSTEM needs to be inserted in this game post haste. It is far to tedious to gather friends and clans together to play. This bothers me greatly.

As far as rockets go, become a better player, rockets have problems at long (inaccruate) and short (potential for suicide in the AOE) range range and if they miss you than it should be all she wrote for them. Shotgun up close and rifles for distance.

Another thing that grinds my gears is no class balancing or at least the ability to see the settings and classes in a match before you join. Lord, how many times have I played matches where everyone wants to be an Engineer or Assault class, the problem is that a real team that is efficent and wins consistently should be balanced and have medics to heal, engineers to defend, tacticians to create spawn points, assaults to push forward, and saboteurs to foil the enemy up.

There are other areas to address that I hope are being worked on since its going on two months since launch. DLC with more maps, badges, ribbons, ranks is warranted because a decent player should be fully ranked and have the ribbons and badges in a couple weeks of playtime or less.

I agree on all of those points, especially the standing in the doorway thing, I’ve lost assassinations before as the target because people were blocking my exit route. On 1 occasion I was literally shouting down my mic ‘Get the F*** out of my way!!! ENEMY BEHIND ME!!!’ As for rocket mania, I’d like to say in my defence (before people start pointing fingers) that I would be happy to play with no (or reduced power) rockets, I prefer the shotguns but I was assigned the assault class on the SG clan’s competitive team (I am a rocket machine to be fair) so I have to play with them.

Can anyone tell me why a Medic can’t heal to 2 wounded team members one after the other?

I play medic. It is so damn frustrating. How many seconds do you have to wait or whatever kind of douche magic trick do you have to perform before you can heal another mate?

It make Hulkster so angry! GRrr!

holy shit this rant is dead on I really hate the in the academy but I do use assault some kid always seams to jump in front of the rocket thus making me team kill and commit suicide. And about medics healing, they need to look before they do because i don’t think i have ever been healed without dieing as i am standing up.
