Through a series of unlikely (and probably unfortunate for someone at Sony/Insomniac) events, a lot of folks suspect we’re about to be given an updated PS3 firmware right…. now! No, riiiigggght…. now! Now?! Okay, so very soon. Why do people think that? What makes today any more likely than yesterday or two weeks ago? The Resistance 2 patch 1.50 is what. One of the features included in the patch (which goes live tomorrow, March 26th) is…
More after the jump…
the ability for two people to log into PSN simultaneously and track trophies/stats/etc. In a previous discussion about the state of Resistance 2, the developer had stated that their ultimate goal was to let two people play split-screen co-op on the same machine while tracking individual stats and trophies to their PSN account but firmware limitations kept them from doing so. They said the support they needed would be included in an upcoming firmware version. Well folks, that patch drops tomorrow and we haven’t seen the firmware update. We have seen reports that developers got the firmware update yesterday (which seems… strange) unless they’re implying that the SDK has had this support for a while and they’re just now getting the ability to test their code (which, if true, would seriously make me doubt the feature would go live a mere two days after developers got the firmware.)
The three prominent features folks are attributing to this upcoming Firmware 2.70 are cross-game chatting, voice messaging (30 seconds per message), and the multi-PSN logins on one console. My guess is we’ll see more features than that (and as usual, several will likely be undocumented) whenever the firmware hits. There have even been rumors that someone logged into PSN at just the right time to start (but not finish) a Firmware 2.70 download. Who knows, with GDC going on, I think the rumor mill is pulling double shifts!

*celebration!*
I’d be happy for Insomniac to never touch R2 again if they’d just release one patch that gives us split-screen co-op in campaign mode.
The multiple PSN login thing is nice… i guess… it’s just another thing they’re FINALLY copying from Xbox 360 that should’ve been done a year or two ago. And where’s the cross-game voice chat?!
If this is true then I don’t see what Xbox Live has that the PSN doesn’t have, I’m not a fanboy btw, I have all 3 consoles and couldn’t care less what console I play my games on
FINNALY! Maybe now Nintendo will realise the same mistake for not copying achievements and trophies!
it come out today. It’s ok, the update also gives you Superhuman difficulty for Co-operative mode and Meltdown from Resistance 1 for the competative mode, there’s also a ton of new coustoms and a match pack you can buy in the PS Store for competative.
If you look up the resistance site it tells you more things you’ll be able to do with the new patch
So the real story here is that people are so easily mislead by things like this.
Explanation! See, LBP had the multiple PSN login deal sorted out for the launch of the title, yet R2 didn’t? Here’s why. The PS3 SDK for multiple profile login and other features has been available to dev’s for a long time now (about 6 months or so) but most dev’s didn’t bother upgrading their SDK because they were in the thick of development on their new titles. So R2 comes out, no multi-profile login. LBP drops, updated SDK, came with said feature.
Insomniac goes on to PSBlog and explains that “in the stage of development we were at, the feature was not available, but we hope to integrate it soon” and so on. They now patch R2 for the feature using an updated SDK from months ago, as that they finished the last build on an older SDK, and didn’t implement said features. My big deal with this? Putting words in people’s mouths. This feature has been available for a while now, Insomniac even clarified that too. But Sony does not standardize the use of those types of features. So hence, it wasn’t required for R2 to launch, so they didn’t spend the time putting it in til now.
Don’t expect a new FW update just yet, unless official word goes out about it. Expect something Tuesday, possibly a price cut, possibly a new FW, but don’t expect a second coming. Thanks.
