Killzone 2 Single Player Impressions (Updated)

March 2nd, 2009 at 3:00 pm · 13 Comments

killzowned_on_level10I spent a lot of time playing Killzone 2 over the past few days and thought I’d chime in on what seems to be the latest craze… giving my impressions of Killzone 2.  There will be NO SPOILERS in this article, so feel free to read it even if you haven’t played or finished the single player campaign.  A funny thing happened to my impressions of the game last night though… keep reading to find out what happened.

First, let’s get this out of the way; visually, Killzone 2 clearly rocks.  It easily compares well with the best of the best console games.  I won’t get into the “best looking console game ever” hype, or “better than Crysis on a PC” talk… it should be enough that it’s one of the best looking console games ever.  I mean really, does anyone think the 2nd or 3rd prettiest girl in the world is somehow flawed or lesser because there is someone out there prettier?  No, you’d still crap yourself if she asked you out on a date, so let’s leave it at that… the game’s gorgeous (and you’re not getting a date from the 2nd or 3rd best looking girl in the world… although I hear the 5,341,992,493rd prettiest girl in the world would like to go out for hot-wings with you… I think her name is Bruce.)

To be fair, due to an unforseen division of personal property, my sound system is, well… no longer mine.  I’m using my TV speakers at the moment.  No surround sound for me, so I can’t really give my full impressions of the audio work here other than to say what I’ve heard in old-fashioned stereo sounded great.  The dialog was well written and well delivered.  William Shakespeare didn’t write the story, nor did Uwe Boll… it sits in a nice applicable, comfortable spot somewhere in the middle (closer to Shakespeare than Boll if you must know.)  The weapons all had appropriately chunky sounds, the voice acting was far above average in my opinion, and while I can’t specifically remember the music, that tells me that it must have been appropriate as it didn’t stand out as being bad.

A lot of folks are down on Killzone 2 because they say it’s derivative and didn’t really innovate, but I have to ask you how important innovation really is?  I go back the the “pretty girl” analogy.  We view beauty in people by a different set of rules than we’re using here I guess.  I personally don’t get caught up in the “innovation factor” if a game is a really great example of the genre and style it’s aiming for.  Frankly, that’s exactly what we have here.

I’ll go on the record as saying anyone dogging on Killzone 2 for not being innovative is being a nitpicky, attention-seeking whiner.  I hope you never enjoy any movies, music, television shows, books or any other form of entertainment again until you realize how silly that viewpoint is unless you’re comparing something that is a blatant copy of something else.  If a game like Killzone 2 was completely innovative, it wouldn’t have the FPS fan base chomping at the bit for it, it would somehow be different due to all the innovation.  Guerilla Games hit their mark with the game and while I won’t use the word “perfection” here, the phrase “best of class” might be a very appropriate and easily defendable label to use.

Okay, I promised I’d talk about “something” happening during my playthrough of the game so I’d better get to that before I forget.  Let me preface this by giving a little bit of background on my thoughts of linear gameplay and general gameplay difficulty.  Linear gameplay is not an automatic negative to me when playing a game.  A highly scripted linear vision of a game can still be extremely enjoyable.  I enjoyed the heck out of Gears of War 2 but it was super linear at the same time.  Being linear didn’t detract from my enjoyment of Gears of War 2 one bit.

Game difficulty is another area I may differ from other folks.  I expect easy/novice/amateur/whatever to be a given that you can just play through the game beginning to end without much hassle at all.  I expect normal/regular/default/whatever to be relatively easy to get through with some skill and/or perseverance.  It shouldn’t require super-human skill or endurance.  A typical player shouldn’t have any real problem getting through the game.  I expect hard/advanced/expert/veteran/whatever to be a real challenge even for experienced players… I would always prefer to see better skilled enemies rather than simply having more enemies or enemies that don’t seem to take much damage.

What I experienced in the Killzone 2 playthrough (on the normal skill level) was exactly what I expected… until… well, until I got to the last level.  Remember, I promised no spoilers here and I’ll keep my word.  The last level (which I verified as the last level by looking at a walkthrough after dying oh say 20 times) has such a difficulty spike over the entire rest of the game that it’s currently tainted the entire experience for me.  I’ve never claimed to be a super-skilled FPS player, but I would think being able to work my way through the rest of the game without any real showstoppers should somehow attest to the fact that I should be able to beat the last level.  I think part of the issue is the choice of checkpoints in the level because I had to replay minutes long sections numerous times because I hadn’t magically triggered whatever checkpoint marker that would allow me to continue further into the level after dying, but eventually… and I almost believe it was by dumb luck at times, I advanced checkpoint to checkpoint until I finally got frustrated and quit after playing the last level for over two friggin’ hours.

While not giving away any plot points, I’d like to generally describe for the folks wondering where exactly I’m having my problems; it’s in the two-story room after clearing the courtyard.  The courtyard was, in my opinion, a significant ramp-up in difficulty, but I was able to make it through by taking it slow and steady which I’m sure is the intended strategy.  In the room I’m in, I have no idea how you’re supposed to get through it (even after reading the walk-through, mind you) without a healthy dose of luck and in my case, a suspension of my tendency to put a game down after failing a level some 20+ times.

Don’t get me wrong… I’d LOVE to be one of those guys that fights through that level and gets that serious sense of accomplishment.  One of those guys that can talk about how tough that level was but how I somehow fought my way through it tooth and nail.  After over two hours on that final level last night, I felt much more like one of those guys that gives up at the end never to come back and finish the game for fear the frustration would completely outweigh all the fun I had throughout the rest of the game.  For the night at least, that’s exactly what I did.  I gave up and went to bed.

If you’ve already beaten the campaign mode I would encourage you to email me your personal strategy for this level (please don’t post it in a comment and ruin it for anyone else) by sending your tips to rothbart at sarcasticgamer dot com.  I’m sure there are a ton of people out there that will claim the level is “easy, once you know the trick” to which I’d simply counter with “I didn’t need to know any tricks for the other nine levels!”

To sum it up, impressions for Killzone 2 levels 1 through 9: wowsers!  Impressions for level 10: wowsers!  I even liked the vehicle sections of the game.  It’s safe to say we will see Killzone 3, I just hope we see it sooner than the length of time it took us to get from the E3 target render to the game we’ve got right now.  Killzone 3 in 2011 would make me happy!  A patch to bring level 10’s difficulty in line with the rest of the game would make me even happier!  If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go off and whimper in a corner trying to forget level 10 and remember how much I liked the first 9 levels…

Click here for multiplayer impressions from Lono and stay tuned for a “second impressions” write-up from Yamster.  We’re nowhere near being done with our Killzone 2 coverage.  I wouldn’t even be surprised to find Lono and his team working on a survival guide!

UPDATE: I can’t believe I totally forgot to mention the SIXAXIS controls in Killzone 2… Guerilla Games, kudos for your SIXAXIS choices.  Planting explosives was decent and sparingly used, but the sniping aspect…  bravo!  You need a steady hand and can quickly make slight adjustments to your aim.  It’s one of the best uses of SIXAXIS control I’ve seen yet.

    • I should have known the last level would be an issue for some people. I thought it was fantastic, easily one of the best and most challenging FPS endings in a long, long time. I have beaten the game on Veteran and I am about half way through on Elite right now.

I won’t post a spoiler on how to beat the waves at the end, or how to beat the boss on the front page, but lets just say that the grenade launcher and the knife are your friend.

After Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, Crysis and so many other FPS titles let me down with their overly easy final battles, I was blown away by how cool, tough and fun the end of Killzone 2 was. Maybe it’s just me though…

I don’t know where I heard it, pretty sure it was a podcast actually, but apparently (and bear in mind I haven’t played the game yet), the trick with the last level is to constantly push forward because it’s an infinite spawn with a pre-defined stop-the-spawn point (or points).

Good to hear about the six-axis use, can’t remember a [big budget] game that’s used it well other than Ratchet.

I’m just a few levels into the game…and I do not like the six-axis use. Actually I don’t like the six-axis, period. So far I’ve only used it for turning the valves, hasn’t worked well for me.

Oh, you got me with the Bruce link. I knew that I shouldn’t have clicked it, but I couldn’t help myself. Now I’m scared for life……

      You big baby.
Level 10 was difficult but welcome the damn challenge. That was the ONLY level that made my PS3 slow down in parts; such was the intensity of the battle. For me level 10 was a beautiful experience as well as a challenge. Adavncing took some time, yes, not helped by the fact I was repeatedly blown away by the volume of things going on. But for me it was the only level that (completely, totally, utterly)entirely consumated the feeling of war. If anything, the sheer number of deaths I suffered forced me to take new and different approaches I wouldn’t have otherwise tried, meaning I got more out of the game.
Loved level 10. Loved the whole game. If the same numbers played Killzone 2 as they did Halo 3, it could easily come to define this generation of games.

If I could work out how to even aim at one of the bad guys it’d help, all I do I go from too far right, to too far left, back to too far right again etc etc

The button mapping is fine, the aiming acceleration on the other hand makes the game feel cheap, broken and poorly tested.

Maybe i’m just rubbish, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

Otherwise it’s a solid FPS and will sell by the tanker load.

PS. Yamster, is L10 as tough as Mile High Club on MW?

    • Joshthegreat27 says:

Change the controls to Alternate if you haven’t already. They’re much more mainstream FPS.

    • RobT says:

Sorry I mean Rothbart not Yamster, he’s busy with the packaging!

I don’t mind the basic controls, they’re not a million miles from RB6, right stick to use iron sights etc etc.

I just wish the aiming was a little more linear, like almost every other fps. The acceleration should be an option, at least in SP anyway, i’d understand wanting to keep things ‘uniform’ in MP

    • I’ve beaten the game now… I don’t feel that feeling of satisfaction of a hard battle won. I do feel the relief of not having to play that level anymore though. It’s not the level per se that I didn’t like, it was a combination of the difficulty, the unclear progression expected (ie. you could play and play and play and never progress to another checkpoint) and generally the fact that the game would let you do it ad nauseum without ever saying to itself “You know, the guy’s died over 50 times here, let’s toss him out a hint or give him a baby-checkpoint” I mean heck, even some of the Crash Bandicoot games on the PSOne would tailor checkpoints for you if you repeatedly died over and over in the same spot.

    • AnthonyB says:

Yeah I feel your pain. I love level 10. It’s definitely the best level of the game. It truly does immerse you in the warfare with so much happening at once, and of course the amazing graphics help. I stopped last night at around the same point you do. Those RPGs are a real pain in the ass. Maybe I’ll take the advice of one of the other commenters and give the grenade launcher a shot.

    • Jake Banks says:

Well this is just fucking great…

Everyone in the world is getting it and I still can
t do it! I got to level 10 last night and still, over 5 hours (probably, I never timed it) I still continue to die, also, I have only one checkpoint, which is when the doors open for the second floor, I just can’t do it, I’m literally on the verge of giving up, i’m not playing it anymore tonight, and it’ll be lucky if I give it a play tomorrow.

Actually thats bullshit, i’ll play from4 til 9 tomorrow and still won’t beat it.

      Fuck, help me!

    • bennett says:

pls..pls… help how do i get over leval 9
i have don it 50 times and still i can do it HELP

    • Morganfell says:

A FEW LITE SPOILERS BELOW. NONE THAT DEAL WITH WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE FIGHT WITH RADEC ARE DISCUSSED.

      Jake,

As soon as the doors open, knife the guy coming down. Go up the stairs and grenade the flamethrower guy straight ahead. There is a second one further around the corner, kill him too if Rico doesn’t whack him as he comes up the other stairwell.

Grab the sniper rifle and head shoot Radec. He is the one generating the stream of automatic fire at the far end of the map. Then grab the grenade launcher. Start fragging the Helghast on the ground. Be advised 2-4 will come up the same stairs you did after you have killed a few. 1 or 2 may wander up the other stairs later. Take them out as well.

Soon you will start to get automatic fire again from the upper floor on the far back right. It’s Radec. Grab the sniper rifle once more and headshoot him again. Listen closely for the rushing sounds that will clue you into when he decloaks. He is like a Helghast version of the Klingon Bird of Prey with it’s decloak sound.

Doors will burst open on the upper floor on the far end right side and troops will pour out. These also have RPG Helghast. Grab the sniper rifle and shoot while dodging the incoming rockets. You do have to be quick here. Shoot Radec one more time where he is at down on the far end. You can always pick out his full auto fire. Kill the rest of the RPG troops and anyone left on the floor below. You will get a checkpoint here.

Now it’s you and Radec. He will decloak close to you and come after you with a knife and Helghast grenades. The electricity can drain your health quickly. You need an automatic weapon here. Flame throwers work some too but lack abundant ammo.

Do not close with him. He will continue to use his optical camo to appear behind you. He cannot fire while cloaked and decloaking makes a noise. This is usually behind you.

Do not knife fight this guy as you will die every thie. It isn’t skill, but Radec isn’t programmed to die like that. Hit him with the flame thrower, automatic fire, and grenades every time you see him. If you look close you can see the shimmer of his camo and you can deal him a lot of damage.

He will reach a point of decloaking behind you and it’s like a tennis match. He’s here, he’s there, he’s here, he’s there. One more good blast of auto fire and he’s as good as dead. He doesn’t know it yet, he just forgot to lie down.

He will reappear at the far end of the arena. Get the sniper rifle and head shoot him a few times and he goes down for good. Watch the cutscene and enjoy.

    • Morganfell says:

Jake, one more note. The fight with Radec is much easier if you stay on the upper level. Going down to the ground floor is just asking for it.
