Killzone 2 Multiplayer Impressions

As far as how you’ll play, or should I say who you will play will depend on your rank.  Staring off, you’ll be a mere grunt with only two choices of weapon, a standard issue ISA rifle with a laser sight, or the Helgast battle rifle.  The difference between the two is that the ISA rifle has a slower fire rate, but is more accurate. As you progress, you’ll first unlock the shotgun and SMG, which are both great close quarter options, especially the shotgun.  The first class you’ll unlock is the medic class.  For the record, it took me about four hours of online play to unlock the medic, which, to me at least, is too long.  After that is the Engineer and so on and so forth. The classes have unique characteristics, but also have draw backs like a lack of variety of weapons to choose from. For instance, the medic can only pick standard battle rifles.

Before getting into what was good and not so good so far, I do want to point out how full featured the MP system is.  It has true clan support, with the ability to check stats and challenge other clans in game.  You also can play any MP map against bots to practice or learn your way around, which is a huge plus for the hardcore. In my opinion, it is one of the most full featured MP games you can buy right now.  Kudos Guerrilla Games.  It’s about time.

What’s good about it? 32 players with no lag is pretty sweet. The visuals are stunning.  The weapons have a nice heft and kick. Different classes and things to earn keep you wanting to play more.

Furthermore the actual game mode is brilliant.  Five minute segments is perfect and the constantly changing game types keep you on your toes and your head in the game.

Spawn protection.  There are automated turrets to keep dirty rotten spawn campers away from spawn points. Kudos to Guerrilla Games for doing it right.

Finally, it is fun as hell.

What isn’t so good. Voice communication is garbled, has low fidelity or, just doesn’t work half the time. Even with my PS3 head set, there were times where I would be talking and my mic just wasn’t on or wasn’t transmitting.  I dunno if that’s a game issue, but it was somewhat constant for me during my game time.

The Engineer class…  This class allows you to build AS MANY (up to four)  robot turrets as you want. To me, this is totally unbalanced. I’ve been in games where you’ll run into an area where an engineer has built a ton of turrets.  It’s ridiculous.  They’re allowed to turret spam a map and they don’t go away when the engineer dies.  I hope they fix this, because it’s total BS.

The kill draws.  Where you kill an opponent and he kills you at the same time. I’ve played for about 4 plus hours in MP.  I stopped counting after I would get kill draws at least two or three times in a round. There has got to be a way to fix this.

Finally, having to rank up just to be a particular class is just foreign to me.  Not much of a fan of it, but most games don’t allow people with widely disparate ranks to play one another, so it hasn’t been a problem yet.  As a corporal, you won’t be playing with people that have achieved a general rank… Yes those people exist even though the game has only been out for three friggin’ days.  Get a life people. I hate you because I want to be you…

Anyway, the bottom line is that I’m really digging the Killzone 2 multiplayer right now.  Yes, I do have minor gripes, but it pales in comparison to this very well done multiplayer experience.

Sounds great. I can’t even have a 16 player match on Halo 3 without lag, so 32 player with no lag sounds awesome! Especially since it’s for free unlike Xbox live. Looking forward to seeing what you guys think of the game.

I’m unbelievably happy to hear this. I’ve got Killzone 2 queued for rental simply because I didn’t want to buy it unless the multiplayer got reviewed as at least equal to Call of Duty’s replayability. I’ll still be renting for the time being, going to want to check out more than one review before deciding to buy, but this definitely is a step in the “buy” direction.

To be honest, if Lono is praising it that’s a great start! Can’t wait to listen to the next Uncle Gamer episode, Parris really didn’t think this was going to be anything special. It’ll be interesting to hear his comments based on this insight.

i think you can make the zoom holdable for multiplayer.

anyway im having a great time with it so far (even if im having a bitch of a time getting the sidearm ribbon).

id like to hear an updated impression when you unlock all the classes Lono, just to see if the experiance is any different

Wow, I’m surprised. I figured that after I destoryed you round after round, you would hate the game! lol.

j/k, I was no match for Lono… except the time we meleed each other at the same time and both died, that was hilarious

Glad to see I’m not the only one concerned with the turrets. I’m not gonna go so far as to say they are a problem now but I’ve been in a few games where it was almost impossible to get out of the spawn room due to the turrets.

I’ve been having a lot of fun playing KZ2 multiplayer. I havent had any problems myself with bot turrets, though I can see it being a problem.

The communication issues are definitely problematic.. there’s just too much damn open-mic in tight spaces. This game NEEDS a party system! Having to set up squads every match is rediculous if you want to play with friends.. getting put on opposite teams is especially frustrating.

I also already miss bots online for lack of a co-op campain.

But, I can’t say I’m not having a blast. Warzone is fun as hell.

The option to change the control layout is great. For me, it just feels more natural to use R2 to fire a gun. My biggest complaint is that you can’t shoot your gun while jumping. Then again, I’m also transitioning from the Halo universe to KZ2 and it’s a big DIFFERENCE. Love the game, love the review !

One thing the class system is doing is making the gameplay change every time, it will balance out soon enough, but because people are still unlocking new ranks the game really changes.

That problem with the headset seems to be a problem with the headset itself. I found that if I connected it up using a USB cable like instructed, you get better sound quality in games designed to support its high quality audio. However, the problem is that the mic volume is really low when you play in a game that doesn’t support the headset specifically.

When I first got End War it was borderline unplayable with the microphone because my orders weren’t being heard clearly. The solution is to sync it up to your PS3 like a standard bluetooth device. You lose the HQ audio in supported games but it actually works in all games correctly then.

    its haves vehicles????

Nice post! But I need to mention a few things about your dislikes.

    1. Mics
It all depends on the range of the person. If they are close you can talk. But as they start to get out of range you cant speak to them. Heck, I’ve even spoken to my enemies as I’m fighting them. Join a squad so you can remain in constant contact.

    2. Enginner Turrets

It may seem unfair to get in your situations, but we enginners have our reasons. Turrets are incredibly weak alone and hardly do damage, but multiple ones can guard anything. To destroy the bots in one shot, just quickly lob a grenade at it. Its as simple as that.

Well, I hope I helped and I hope to see you sometime. my PSN is Lser

Gilarus from the forums is already a general -_-

  • shane86

I agree about the turrets, they give such a big advantage over people who aren’t ranked up

  • Toshi

While the turrets are unfair to those of lower levels they are not particularly useful to those of higher levels. In a 1 on 1 fight man vs turret most people will be able to kill the turret or run past it/dance around it without getting killed. decent support weapon but crappy for actually getting kills. Air support is similar though even less useful (I think I have a kill with air support after multiple uses). Besides Lono knows that my turrets aren’t as scary as me with a shotgun.

  • mafecto

The turrets are easy to kill, plus you get a point for killing them. Also, aim toggle can be changed in the options.

Otherwise, this game is legendary. If you dont own it you like men, it’s that simple.
