This is it. THE REVIEW. No “is it racist?” talk here. I’ll leave that to the people that have a much higher sense of self importance than me. I’ll stick to reviewing the single player, Mercenaries Mode and leave the rest up to the “professionals.”
One star or two? Find out, after the jump.
Resident Evil 5 has huge shoes to fill. No doubt about it. Resident Evil 4 was one of the “it” games of the last generation of consoles when it debuted on the Gamecube. It sold so well, Capcom re-released the game on the PS2 and that sold huge numbers as well. RE4 was so popular that it influenced the next generation of shooters like Gears of War and every third person shooter that followed it. So, there’s no where to go, but down.
The good news is, there’s much to like in RE5. There’s zombies, the continuation of the Resident Evil mythology and, of course, more zombies. For some, there’s much to not like as well, including the controls and the fact that it’s not set in a scary mansion like the other game in the series.
Yes, RE5 is set in Africa. You shoot people in the daytime. In the sunlight. Both of these factoids are huge departues for the series, and as for this writer, I applaud them for it. No matter what Capcom did with RE 5, they would be criticized for it. The proverbial damned if you do and damned if you don’t. If they did the big, scary mansion setting again, it would be ripped for being stale, but others would hail that the game got back to its roots. If they change it up, they get criticised for not being a “Resident Evil” game, whatever that means. The story will go where it goes, and in this part of the story, they’ve gone back to basics with Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine and took the series back to where the T and G viruses came from: Africa. It worked for me.
Control issues and the wrap up, on page 2.

I already played through it 6 times and still cant get enough of it, because of the amazing coop experience. Everything works just fine in this game.
I hope they´ll bring some REAL additional download-content, like Lost And Damned for GTA4!!!!
hey Lono,
Slightly OT, i’ve noticed that on the RSS feed for this site, it includes the whole article (if it’s a single page) and not just up to the jump.
I know you guys aren’t all about Page Views/Hits but wasn’t sure if this affected that.
Great Review too, and good to see you keeping away from all the non relevant bullcrap that surrounds this title.
Rob
Sold review dude,
the people that complain about it not being “survival horror” or this or that anymore need to realize that, it is what it is. You can’t expect the same thing every time. I’ve chosen the route of just accepting it because once you’re past that you can start enjoying it for what it is.
@Rob320: We put the whole article in the RSS feed so people at work can still check the site out even if our site is blocked.
good review. Then again if you didn’t praise it i’m willing to bet a lot of people would proberly try and rip you a new one for insulting resident evil 5. I’ve seen people start one over Super smash bros brawl and Killzone 2.
I still think the people complaining about the DLC are complaining over spilt milk.
Just finished it today, it’ll take a lot of multiple replays to upgrade all the weapons (or the egg cheat), the costumes you unlock are a bit..odd.
RE5 is the first dose of gaming crack for 2009. It’s ridiculous how addictive this game is in co-op. And the restrictive nature of the in-game inventory adds superbly to strategy, just as it did in previous games in the franchise. It feels more like an action game now rather than survival horror, but Capcom have made it work for a predominantly “scary” franchise. Story is great as well, fits extremely well with the previous games.
Thank you, great review free of hypothetical banter and fluff. I am a huge zombie enthusiast and Resident Evil fan and have written my own review. I think it’s along these same lines.
I disagree with you Lono that the Story in part 5 is better. It really starts very late in the game, the dialogues are horrible (the elevator) and Wesker is boring for people who only played the 4th game, which i played as my first resident evil game.
But in a few minutes i will play the last three chapters, so maybe i get a surprise…
