I almost bought a red Xbox controller… because it’s red.

redcontroller

What the hell was I thinking?  I found myself in the den of sin that is Gamestop this weekend, looking for a copy of N3 when I saw it.

A gleaming red Xbox 360 controller.  Wireless.  Red.  Rechargeable.  Red.

It didn’t occur to me that I already have 2 perfectly functional controllers at home, and need no more.  All that mattered was how red that sucker was.  (And it was REALLY REALLY red.)

For 64.99 I could have taken that red controller home to play games and bask in its redness.  As a matter of fact, I almost did.

I actually reached up to grab it.  Slid it down the metal rod.  Then THUNK!  It hit the security stopper thing.

Thank God.

This story has a happy ending.  I went home to play my newly purchased game with my faithful monochromatic controllers that have served me well.  Sure they aren’t red…  But they work.  If I really feel the need for a red controller, I will take a red Sharpie to my original white controller and call it a red one.

Quick discussion topic…

What’s the dumbest gaming peripheral or device you ever dropped money on, only to regret it almost instantly?

    • Easy, it is more of a system I guess. The Virtual Boy, I got that a midnight on launch only to get home and try to reason with my self that NIGHT the 400 dollars I paid was worth it.

    • Another good one comes to mind is in the NES era when they had the “power glove” it was just silly but you felt bad ass …..for a day

      A $65 controller or a copy of Ninety-Nine Nights…

I’m not sure which is worse

Never a peripheral – I’ve had wireless controllers, those Nyko controllers with fans that kept your hands from getting sweaty (actually a pretty good idea!). Accessory-wise, though, the “afterburner” fan kit for the 360. My Oblivion kept freezing up at about 60 hours in. As a computer guy, they had me convinced that it was an overheating issue. Come to find out, you just had to clear the cache by holding down the “A” button during the initial black loading screen before the first logo. Plus, the damn thing was so loud I finally took it off so I could hear my games again.

Doc, if you want a RED controller don’t sharpie it – just take it apart with a torx wrench and spray paint it properly. You could even do an SG logo.

    • This is very interesting, the other day, I was reading an article that was saying Red encourages spending in males and low and behold, here it is in action, lol.

I’m interested because it hasn’t happened to me yet.

Logitech usb head set for the PS2 That thing is a piece of crap.

    • chris says:

Technicly the red one is monochromatic as well. It only has one colour.

I too made the abysmal mistake of bringing the Virtua Boy into my life.

As for the controller, it might have seemed a better idea if Microsoft made it a part of the (RED) campaign, but when a controller is the price of a new game, there’s no way.

Not a peripheral I think… Not that I can remember now at least. But I regret I was brought into the FinalFantasy hype. I LOVED FFX, so I bought FFXII on launch without doing my background check, and games are really expensive at launch here in Norway, $83…
Then I found out that the game was crap, technical flawless, but the gameplay and story was crap.
… I actually miss random encounters. But seriously, in a JRPG, with a uninteresting story, and monsters gaining levels as you are? Come on! That means that the first monsters you met will be just as hard after 80hours of grinding!
So I never finished it, it just didn’t do it for me. So now I’m working through FFX again, trying to beat all the damn dark aeons…

The character’s, as well as the story, in FFX didn’t capture me. I am actually on the last boss of FFX and can’t motivate myself to finish it, so I started FFXII and like it better so far.
I like the idea of not needing to grind, you can just play through the game continuously and enjoy the gameplay and story.

Wii fit and that stupid balance board. I used it twice, and it’s collected dust since 2 days after launch. That was $90 down the crapper.

      Doc,

the bigger question was why in the hell were you looking for N3? Its a mess of a game.

Wii sports accessory pack. I have nowhere to keep it, I never use it, and it feels like tacky crapola.

The red ones make you play better, it’s a well known fact.

Lmao I did the same thing with my black controller. :P

    • boringsupreez says:

Mine would be a blue madcatz controller for PS2. At the time I didn’t realize how crappy third party stuff usually is. The controller lasted about a year, and the pictures on the buttons lasted about a month. At least it only cost $15.

    • BasharTeg says:

Being a red-head myself, I can understand the fascination with red things. People love me. Red controllers are desirable. Simple logic ;)

    • PayneTrainSG says:

This Logitech Controller for the PS2. People fail to realize that back when third party peripheral support that wasn’t MadCatz was common, welcomed, and sometimes rejoiced. But Logitech, a company that makes good headsets and mice for computers, made a shit PS2 controller. The reciever rarely worked, batteries died quickly. It was a nightmare.

Sega 32x. The Sega CD was great, the 32x was a waste.
If we’re talking purely accessories….probably the offbrand Gamecube controller with extension cord, when I found a Wavebird for just about the same price two days later.
Other than that, I’ve been good with accessories….wireless controllers for Sega Genesis, Time Crisis/Point Blank guns, mod chip thing for PS1, I even got my money’s worth out of the DexDrive.

Should have just asked me for a copy of N3. I’d be happy to ship it out to you.

Worst device I bought was a Nintendo DS on launch day. Lame lame lame, no games worth a damn for over a year. Sold them on eBay and bought a PSP.

I have since bought DS lite years later since they have a decent run of games now.

    • Gir15 says:

hey doc, I actually bought one of those red controllers with the recharge cord, I love it because red is my favorite color. It really fits with my white xbox lol. Uhh…. useless item….. a racing wheel for the ps2 only because it broke the same day I bought it

I bought the RED controller, for a friend, so it wasn’t “useless”

    • Ryno r13 says:

The super scope hands down. I worked with maybe three games and the you an awful headache.

    • LouieTheGreat says:

Guess what! My friend has TWO red controllers. JELOUS??

    • iBrick says:

The super scope was awesome! I never regretted that one. I did however, regret every third-party controller I ever bought (which were all for the N64 and Gamecube).

    • kyot says:

I got a red controller recently. I only had 1 controller, and this one is rechargeable. so less batteries consumption = yay~

for this gen, 360 cam (or all cams in general?). It still seems like a gimmick and not used much in games. It was fun getting my face on a winning eleven character and hugging Owen though.
