Good iPhone Games is a new feature all about good iPhone games (though I imagine you already guessed that bit). If you have any suggests for a less prosaic title, feel free to email your suggestion toeoco-emailor just leave a comment on this very post!

Zen Bound is a game about coiling rope around wooden sculptures. No, it’s not the most compelling game description you’ve ever heard,  but there is actually no other way to describe it. It’s a simple game, there’s no doubt about that, but while simple games are not uncommon, the tranquil, relaxing experience of Zen Bound is unparalleled.

A rope, of limited length, is tied to an wooden object and you are tasked with rotating it, so that the rope touches the object’s surface as much as possible. Where rope and wood meet, paint materialises, therefore showing you the areas you haven’t yet covered. As you coat an increasing percentage of the structure’s surface, a handy percentage metre goes up. The more you cover, the more flowers you get. Get enough flowers and your ready for the next bunch of wrappable wooden objects. I hesitate to focus on the ‘game’ side of Zen Bound, because that’s not really what it’s about. The game is a relaxing exercise in tact more than anything else.

Zen Bound is gorgeously rendered throughout: from the level select screen (which takes the form of a tree draped in wooden blocks), to the softly glowing lanterns (that tell you how many flowers you need to continue), all accompanied by a soothing score. The rope’s behaviour is incredibly realistic, and the games touch screen controls work perfectly.

Zen Bound goes out of its way to be, as the game’s developers put it, a calm and meditative experience. If you ever find yourself getting tense, stressed, or if you just need a good new iPhone game, buy Zen Bound, put in some headphones and before you know it…zen.
