It’s the Game Developer’s Conference… These panelists, all of them, owe their livelihoods to the very industry they so willingly ripped to shreds over the course of their little rant. If it weren’t for all of the “Power Fantasies” people like Heather Chaplin would be live-blogging the next Monarch Butterfly migration. If it weren’t for “casual” gamers nobody would take N’Gai Croal seriously. If it weren’t for publisher hype, there would be no hype or excitement for the industry Leigh Alexander loves to loathe. If it weren’t for Metacritic, Adam Sessler and G4 would be COMPLETELY irrelevant in game reviews.
Finally, if there were no bad gaming journalism, how could any of us ever appreciate the genius journalism of Stephen Totillo or his impressive peers.
All kidding aside, I think journalists who are asked to sit on a panel like this need to follow Mr. Totillo’s lead and bring at least an ounce of humility to the table. It’s far too easy for a panel like this to come off, Ms. Alexander so eloquently put it, as an “Ego-System of Negativity”.
What the hell does that even mean?
