Transformers: Trash Cash

When the sequel to Michael Bay’s (aka the childhood dream killer) Transformers film was announced, it was only a matter of time before Activision announced a sequel movie tie-in game so Autobot fans could once again feel a little piece of their souls die.  The first movie tie-in title scored an absolutely pathetic Metacritic high score of 56 (on the PS2) and stands proud as one of the absolute worst high profile video games of recent years.

This past Friday Activision announced they were indeed working on a video game tie-in to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, to be released around the same time as the film (June 26th, 09).

Find out why Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the game is GUARANTEED to be garbage and all the other depressing details after the jump!

Do I really need to explain why I have no faith whatsoever that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is going to be even remotely decent? First off, it’s a movie tie-in game, which means it will aim to come out alongside the film.  Which means that a rushed, buggy, half finished game is the BEST we can hope for (the first Transformers game was not even that good).

No less than five different developers are working  to create the new game across all current platforms. Luxoflux is developing for the 360 and PS3, Beenox on the PC, Krome Studios on the Wii and PS2, Savage Entertainment on the PSP, and Vicarious Visions is making two DS games.

The game itself will be an action title just like the last one, only this time you can be miserable online too! No word yet whether or not any of the films stars will lend their voices to the game, but if they have even a shred of self respect, I’d say the chances are slim.

For all the special effects based awesomeness the first film delivered, it was a far cry from what lifelong Transformers fans expected. The first game was just a cash grab, plain and simple. It had no redeeming quality save for its name. Alas, both the film and the game ($75 million in the US?!) made money. While I will no doubt “enjoy” watching Revenge of the Fallen (at least once), I am saying unequivocally that I guarantee that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen the game will be a digital abortion.

Why should they bother to make it good? The general population is so mindless and brand name blinded that they will buy anything with a popular name on it (ala the first games sales figures). Good or not, the new game will make a lot of money. Which is all movie-tie in games are really for. Not to deliver an incredible gaming experience within a universe thousands of fans around the world have loved for almost two decades. Nor to produce a game that could be turned into a critically acclaimed and popular franchise with a super well known brand name that could survive without a movie-tie in. No, this game is being made for one reason and one reason only; to cash in without having to work for it.

Hey, how can you say that about movie tie -ins, why, if it wasn’t for quality movie tie-ins, where would publishers like Ocean and US Gold be now. Come to think of it, has anyone seen those guys lately?

To quote wikipedia:”One of the first movie tie-in games, Atari’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) was deemed so bad, it was blamed for causing a game industry crash.”

      Same s**t, different digital media.
