Alliteration always actively agrees awesomely. Enough of that though; Rockstar has revealed a long-overdue sequel to last-gen Wild West shooter Red Dead Revolver called Red Dead Redemption, coming to PS3 and 360 this Fall. Not played the last one? Shame on you!
Anyway, the teeny bit of info we have, after the jump.
If you didn’t play Red Dead Revolver, I’m not too surprised. Rockstar’s spaghetti western, originally Capcom’s property before they sort of gave up on it, revolved around the titular cowboy – yes, called Red – and his really quite bloody tale of revenge. It sold pretty well, played well, and was rated well. But I never knew anybody who had actually played it.
With Red Dead Redemption, the western receives a much-needed revival on consoles; save for Neversoft’s Gun, it’s been seriously under-served in the world of gaming. Redemption is set at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution and looks to do for the Wild West what GTA did for New York all those months ago, and make it – to use this almost intolerable phrase – a “living, breathing” environment, or as close as you can get. Or something like that.
Yup, Redeption will be a free-roaming western. A free-roaming Western. Could you think of a more perfect game? Cowboys, saloons, prairies, wide-open deserts, and as much horse-jacking as you can shake a cactus at. Oh, and from the looks of the screenshots, carriage-jacking too; or at least some highwayman side-missions.
It won’t be ugly either; Redemption will use Rockstar’s RAGE engine, which made GTA IV’s really ugly Eastern Europeans look really, really ugly. So it’ll look good, it’ll hopefully play well (Rockstar San Diego’s track record is good, having developed the original and more recently Midnight Club LA; don’t expect powersliding horses though) and it’s a spaghetti western in a game. Could this be any better?

Gamers rejoice! I rented the original game years ago when it was fairly new and beat it, started over again, rented it again a month later, and then finally broke down and bought it when it hit $20. Probably one of my favorite oXbox titles. Ever.
I grew up (and still live in) a southwestern state. My grandpa rarely watches anything that’s not a spaghetti western, so I’ve been exposed to the classics of the genre. The original had limited freedom between missions, but making it a sandbox will be killer.
Thanks for the story, Yamster.
I’m hesitantly excited for this game. I hope they nail it!
LOL, my CAPTCHA text = “truly excitement”
I loved the first game. My buddies and I that have played it have always thought they should make a sequal. Better late than never.
I’m really excited for this, the first game was a lot of fun.
