Go ahead. Throw your tomatoes. I can take it. Just because I think Resident Evil 5’s demo was the low point of my week of demo-playing, you hate me don’t you? I know, I’m a big fat idiot… kinda like whoever designed the control scheme.
RE5 looks pretty awesome, and the opening cut scene had me really pumped up for a showdown. Then I got to play the game. From there forward, a lot of cussing and sighing ensued as I tried to wrap my feeble mind around the buttons, which seemed way too complicated for a game where you are supposed to just shoot zombies. The camera seemed a bit too close, and despite toggling several different control options, I never felt like I was playing RE5. I felt like the game was playing me, and laughing at my idiotic attempts to make my way past a few simple foes.
Once again, my gamercard is up for revocation I guess.
Sorry, but I’d rather just go shoot more Left 4 Dead Zombies than subject myself to any more of this. I’ll bet the game is great. Too bad I can’t frickin play it.
Again, I am sure its just me though.

It sure is…
Lol – I couldn’t play the stupid thing either. I didn’t even finish the demo. Your words could not better echo my sentiments. The intro was awesome, but trying to aim with that stupid laser pointer, then reload – I switched to the knife until I turned into a “brother buffet,” at which point I just held down the logo button and hit “Exit to Xbox Dashboard.” I turned to my wife and said, “Wow, that demo sucked. That wasn’t even fun.”
Graphics are beautiful. I *want* to like this game, I just can’t in its present state.
I found the controls easy to adapt to because they’re essentially a mix of RE4 and dead space. So definitely nothing new to get to grips with. Excellent looking game in my opinion, can’t wait for release.
Dude, I couldn’t stand the thing. I actually gave it a good attempt. I played that stupid demo for over 20 minutes, then went back an tried again the next day, just to see if I’d been “off my game.” The controls were horrible. I’ve been playing so many 1st/3rd person shooters that worked, that I just couldn’t find time to try to learn a broken control scheme.
Predicted I wouldn’t dig it, and… I didn’t dig it.
I will .. destroy you..
Re5 = Survival Horror
L4D = Action Game
L4D=/=RE5
Although I do agree they can be a bit frustrating.
Same here…I’ve tried to play it 5 times and I CAN’T STAND THE CONTROLS!!
Sluggish, slow, too zoomed in, feel like I’m trying to get a stiff mannequin to move around in the game…
NO THANKS!
I only played RE4 on the Wii and thought the controls were great. You couldn’t move and shoot but your cross hair was always on screen; thus whenever you stop to shoot you knew where you would be shooting.
I downloaded the RE5 demo for the PS3 yesterday and was disappointed, frustrated, and upset. With how great this game looks its a let down it feel so clunky when traversing the environment.
With all the controversy out there on the internet you think Capcom would have thrown a bone to the people who don’t like the classic RE tank controls. One little option could have stopped all this controls talk for what is looking to be a great RE game.
Don’t worry Doc I didn’t like it either. I agree the camera and the controls feel wrong for this generation. In fact I predict the game will sell well, but you’ll find it used in large quantities very quickly. Dead Space is the better game.
The RE4 controls, on which Resi 5’s “Type A” scheme is based on, were fine. You held R1 to aim, pressed X to shoot (as X was the general ‘action’ button) and that was that.
Why did they change shoot to Square and Reload to X? I kept getting them mixed up and didn’t like this game as much as I should’ve. Resi 4 was brilliant. Resi 5? Brilliant, if we got the old controls back…
This game will be great, maybe not as awesome as Resi4, but still really great,
the only PROBLEME is the demo itself -.-”
The just chose the wrong passages out of the game, I guess.
I mean how many of these stressful situations were in Resi4? Some, but they weren´t the main part of the game and in the demo there are NO calm passages.
There are these strong bossenemies in BOTH demo levels…why would you chose these passages for a demo?
thats just stupid, because u try to get use to the controls and they send u this giant moron with his axe right at the beginning…^^”
A hint that they don’t explain is the infinitley useful quickturn (back on the left stick and A). Also, use your knife when there’s only one or two enemies, it helps conserve ammo. Thirdly, use the environment, climb onto rooftops, jump out of windows, blow up barrels. It’s more about using every shot you have and every piece of the environment tacticaly. Go back into the demo and try it again, i’d like to see if it grows on you.
oh and lol, the captcha is “Doc learn”
i think the controls were fine and i liked the demo alot, but i think you are not used to thoses types of controls and should not play that game.
I played with the control system that was most like Resi4, coz i played resi4 so much the controls felt like second nature to me and really comfortable.
i guess i was just used to them, so it didn’t feel stupid, plus the whole reason there slow and clunky is to add tension and fear, you know, to add to the whole horror aspect , as well as focusing on the survival part of the genre rather than the action.
It’s my firm belief that 99% of the people who are complaining about the controls in RE5 have not played an earlier RE game and are completely missing the point of having restrictive controls. The demo is great. It’s a no-brainer buy when it’s released.
I totally agree. The controls are such a pain in the ass, it’s like they’re working AGAINST you. I know that it controls like previous RE games. The problem is, this isn’t LIKE the previous games, it’s more of a shooter than it is a survival horror game. That being said, once you get comfortable with the controls, it’s not so bad.
I went with control scheme D, with the left trigger to aim and the right trigger to shoot. It’s the same control scheme as Gears of War… The whining on this thread is just mindboggling…
Ohh boo ho, I couldn’t shoot a zombie… Puhleaze… Go home and cry to momma. I’ll be shooting zombies.
And for the rest of you, please stop comparing L4D to RE5. They’re night and day.
“It’s my firm belief that 99% of the people who are complaining about the controls in RE5 have not played an earlier RE game and are completely missing the point of having restrictive controls.”
I’ve been hearing this argument a bit and I fundamentally disagree. Restrictive control are one thing (not being able to perform certain functions like jump etc thus lessening the options for the player). Broken controls are another – why is it so hard to change weapons? To reload? Why to I have to equip things before using them (like the green herbs – when I click on it, it should work). So many times during the demo I found myself hitting all the buttons on the control in an effort to remember how to do something in three actions that should take one.
As for the no running while gunning – I get what they’re trying to do and it worked before, but we’re in a new generation now, and it’s unacceptable. I know it’s fantasy, but the idea that my character is SURROUNDED by enemies and STANDS STILL TO SHOOT is ridiculous. It’s lazy game design to hinder the player to create tension. Dead Space managed to be tense without completely handicapping the player.
Finally, the AI seems really bad. Several times during my three playthroughs I encountered Sheva surrounded by zombies, but they were all just standing about a foot away from her yelling as opposed to attacking. They’d politely wait their turn like 1970 James Bond henchmen instead of bum-rushing her or me.
I want to love this game. GOD I WANT TO LOVE THIS GAME. But it is, deeply, deeply flawed.
is there a reason why my comment doesn’t show up? it was really frikken long and i’m getting pissed at this captcha “herdish mogn” is that what it says?
WTF
i tried it again and it didn’t post WTF! what is wrong with that one comment?
LET THIS COMMENT THROUGH!!
I did what Neverdizzle did so I did play 4, I enjoyed it but I thought that 5 was really annoying. I never thought I’d like a game better on the Wii. I think that the whole thing that “It’s more realistic to stand still to shoot” is bull, I can move and shoot a gun just fine. I think they should make it likeKillzone 2’s controls where it looks like you turn slowly and really have to try to aim but it isn’t necessarily accurate, you can move and shoot but that will make it even more unaccurate (I only gathered those assumptions from videos though). I don’t care if I can’t get a nice headshot on a zombie while running away, seeing as though I can’t aim for crap with the laser pointer and I was using a shotgun, AT LEAST LET ME BABYSTEP!!
about time that was almost as annoying as the demo
Doc, I suggest checking out control scheme D, where you aim and shoot with the left and right triggers, respectively. It’s somewhat easier to deal with. Though it RE5 still just isn’t for you, then I wouldn’t hold it against ya.
I really only found the frustrating parts to be in the real-time item management. There is no greater frustration that scrolling though your (admittedly small) inventory to hand Sheva some rifle ammo ’cause she ran out.
Oh, and the fact that if Sheva is anywhere near you, there’s NO OPTION WHATSOEVER to heal yourself with herbs, unless you literally run away from her until the option pops up. What the hell, Capcom? How am I gonna survive in Zombie Africa if I can’t heal myself efficiently?!
I’m going to have to side with Lono on this one Doc. I don’t even like horror games, and I enjoyed the demo. Taylordotcom and I got some time in last night and I had a blast playing. Are the controls and the camera perfect? No, but that does not mean the game isn’t going to be awesome.
I picked up the control scheme within 15 minutes max, and had a blast taking out cap’n chainsaw. Co-Op baby.
Where the ammo at?!
its just you
Woo-hoo tenth time is a charm, I actually beat shanty town. I’m actually feeling Re 5 much better now, but I think the difficulty level is stuck a bit high? In RE 4 I was actually able to kill the chainsaw guy before running out of bullets.
I called it when we saw footage back in July 2008. Terrible controls.
=-/
@ Heavenly Yeti: What did you call? That RE5 would have the same control scheme as RE4? Wow. You have psychic powers! That is amazing…
@Heavenly:
Wow, anymore guesses?
Is Mario wearing a red hat in his next adventure?
Does no one remember Resi4 anymore???? Oo
Everyone was skeptic about it at first and it blew away nearly every gamer. It redefined the whole Genre/Franchise
Now we get the sequel with Coop gameplay & HD and everyone is skeptic again?
About the controls?
You cant be serious ^^
It is a sad day when I decide that a “AAA” title/series like Resident Evil (yes I’ve played all the others) is in no way shape or form a purchase for me. I will look for it at a price of $15.99 or under, brand new, but there is no way on Earth that I’ll purcase a game with such poor controls as this. I’ll never understand developers who want realism in their games and then they go out of their way to completely do the opposite and leave no option for the player to decide how they want to play. If I’m ever chased by an entire town of Zombies – I promise I WILL run and shoot at the same time … there is no chance that I’m going to stand still and hope that I’m able to kill something that walks directly straight up to me.
Why Capcom, Why?
damn it’s so easy
plus you got the control scheme on the loading screen and there is barely anything and that’s all you have to use in the game
pull one trigger to aim and the other to shoot simple as hell. gears of war has that and i don’t see anybody complaining
it’s a great game, too bad you just didn’t figure it out
i think bob jack summed it up. 1 button to aim another to shoot if that’s too complicated for you then you are a n00b. in gears of war nobody holds down the left trigger and moves while they shoot because you move to damn slowly. its a survival horror game you supposed to run away as much as you shoot if you dont like that then play another bland grey boring fps W/ REEELLLY TITE C0TROLS! LOL!!1!
Give the controls about an hour to get used to, the less you complain the easier the controls get. Once you get past the curve its really enjoyable.
RE4 had the same controls and that sold like a bagillion copies, so lets not rag on a game just cause you wont take the time to learn to play it
RE5 will probly be the best zombie game out and all games nedd time to adapt to the controlling. RE5 rules
Lol, when i played the demo, i got kinda furstrated too
gave up after 2 min, but i bought the game anyway.. Took a vieuw min to figure out the controle, But ones u know, u can really enjoy the game
@ Nichboy, No i havent played the previous RE’s either ^^
