So, we have a couple reviewers on this site, and when they review a game or hardware… well… it is around 3 pages. I am here to give you my first impressions of games or hardware that I only spent an hour on.
Disclaimer: Because an hour is only spent, most of the game has not been played or features used with the hardware tested, so my opinion of the game may change over time, and hell, some of the stuff I say might be down right wrong. FYI.
After the jump, I review the first hour with the Tritton AxPro 5.1 Surround Sound Headset…
When the walls are thin, or you don’t have the money to spend on a 5 speaker surround sound system… the only option becomes a headset. Enter the Tritton Ax Pro.
Tritton has been in my life when ever I go to a game trade show or conference. I have had the pleasure of testing their headsets out on many occasions, so I kinda knew what I was getting my self into when I got the box in the mail.
Cost of the product:$130.00 – $150.00 (more in Canada, and I have no idea what it is in the UK… but make sure you protection because you might get f*cked on the shipping charges.
Opening the box: Was easy. Everything was packed tight, and only a few plastic ties. The first thing you will say is… Holy crap, that’s a lot of wires. And you will be 100% correct. There are wires up the wazzo.
The device comes with cloth ear covers or leather covers. I am not a fan of sweat dripping down my cheeks… so I went with cloth.
Directions:Well… I can’t really say they were “directions,” more like a map or a comic strip. What goes where, and what attaches to what… in a story board format. Perfect for me. The other side was a Tritton poster. (ummm yeah…)
Hardware Set up: Set up was easy. You take the optical cord and plug it into the optical output in your PS3, Xbox, TV, DVD, or Cable box. The best part about it is that you have plug it into what ever source you want the sound to come out of. Making you get up each time you want to switch sources. I lost 5 pounds in the first hour and pulled my electronics out at least 4 times to get to the back of em. (You couldn’t understand how much dust collected back there. Wow.)
It also allows you to use a microphone over Xbox Live, or PSN. (I didn’t get a chance to test that out)
*oh and I forgot to mention… it has two… yes, two AC adapters. (I can’t wait for the next thunder storm!)
Software configuration: For people that have no idea what they hell they are doing… good luck. Once you figure it out… your roommate will walk in and want to watch TV or the movie with you. Then you have to go and undo what you just did… settings wise. Not cool.
Sound: The sound is great. This is what you just spent the last half hour setting up for. Is it worth it… yes. I have connected it to anything that had an optical output, and it decoded everything nicely. I was very surprised how loud it could go.
Now, they advertise that it is 5.1 surround sound… but it only has 4 speakers in each ear. So, I have no idea where the 5th channel of sound is coming from. Maybe it’s Magic!
Being able to turn up the bass was a nice feature. Since I used to have to time up my farts with the explosions on the screen to get a more real effect. Now I can release my gas anytime I want, which is a real plus. You have no idea.
Ok, way to much info for a first hour review… so I’ll get right to the point.
Bottom line: These headsets are sweet and the sound is amazing. The only real downer is that it takes 2 AC adapters, and even when you shut the decoding box off, the Tritton headset still has power flowing to it, illuminatingthe T’s on the side. Kind of annoying when you have a orange glow in your room when your trying to sleep. I endedd up unplugging both.
The headset is heavy and you will look like an idiot wearing it, but the sound is worth it.

almost basically what i said about it, just not as gassy.
i have an review of it as well on my user blog.
That came from Frawlz, but it sounds like a product of the PacManPolarBear school of reviewing. It’s awesome, but I hate this, this, this and this. But it’s awesome.
I was REALLY hoping these things had a pass-thru mode or something where you can let the optical go to your stereo as normal, then “turn on” the headset and the sound magically goes to the headset instead… if I’m reading this review correctly, you need to manually connect/disconnect whenever you want to change between speakers and headset? Is that true?
You are correct Roth… unless you want the sound to come out of both… then that would just be plain stupid.
I got this headset for Christmas…easily my favorite present this year. Turn it up during Call of Duty matches and you can hear the footsteps of people sneaking up behind you =]
Frawlz… wait. If you can have audio from _both_, why couldn’t I just turn my receiver down when i wanted to use the headset and turn the headset off when i wanted to use speakers?
I’m confused. That sounds like it’d work for me.
I’ll tell you what…I can’t decide between these and the Turtle Beach X4 wireless headset. The price is pretty much the same. I tried both at CES and couldn’t tell much difference…any opinions?
Okay, I have a pair of AXPros, and frawlz is making this way more confusing than it needs to be. The optical cable goes from the PS3 to the decoder box, and the decoder is what connects to the headphones. What you can do is connect the PS3 optical to the receiver, and THEN from the receiver to the decoder box, if your receiver allows it, otherwise, yes, swapping cables is required. Hope that helps.
The way I have it set up is the optical from my PS3 goes to the headphones, and the HDMI goes to the TV, that way I can switch the sound from the settings, without having to unplug any wires.
@Jacob816: Thanks! I never would’ve thought Frawlz could make something more difficult than it should be… LOL!
where did you find it for $130? I can only find it for $160…
Jacob… You have to understand that this is only a review for a product that I have only used for one hour. Over time, things get easier and I understand more of the features.
The worst part of it is that you have to set the PS3’s system to optical output. It only accepts one choice. So switching from headset to tv speakers took a few extra steps. Steps that would confuse most people during the first couple hours of use.
As for finding it for 130… I have seen a couple have it go low, like Amazon and buy.com.
Roth.. your an ass… lol
@dogsdieinhotcars
I was actually considering the Turtle Beach headset but i read a lot of reviews online saying that they break easily. I can tell you that the AXPro is pretty good, and they seem to be holding up pretty well after two months of use =P
Definitely read reviews of both online, but if wires aren’t an issue, I’d vote for the AXPro. Btw the wires are really long, so unless you sit REALLY far away from your TV that shouldn’t cause any problems.
Costco online has them on sale for $149 shipping included

And I agree with you Rothbart, Frawlz makes it confusing haha
