Sony finally decided MotorStorm was worthy of the full Playstation treatment and fresh on the heels of their recent Destination Playstation event for retailers, we have word that MotorStorm will be making the jump from the PS3 to the PSP and PS2 with MotorStorm Arctic Edge.
Want to know the best part? It’s after the jump… (No pun intended. Okay, well maybe just a little bit…)
As you can see by the teaser for the game, MS:AE includes snowmobiles! Okay, okay, I’m sure my excitement is premature here… this is MotorStorm after all. I know not to expect the game to look as good as any footage I see before release. When you factor in that it’s being developed by BigBig Studios instead of Evolution Studios (now part of Sony proper), well, then there’s even more unknown thrown into the mix. Did I mention snowmobiles?!?!
BigBig Studios are the guys behind Pursuit Force and Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice on the PSP. Both driving games, both games that contain great action sequences, and both games that (in my opinion) were harder to control than my dog around another dog’s turd (don’t ask!) Both games had mediocre receptions, so let’s hope this is where they shape up before they ship this out, right?
I mentioned the game’s coming to the PS2 as well, right? What strikes me about this move is that it’s another in a growing line of Sony taking games from their current gen systems (PSP and PS3) and porting them to the PS2 to make some easy money. After all, selling to 1% of 120M+ users on the PS2 is a better proposition than selling to 5% of the 21M+ PS3 owners. Someone at Sony knows math and (at least eventually) finds a way to root some money out of things. I guess I’d ultimately feel like this wasn’t a budget cash grab if it was being developed internally at Sony. That’s not to say third party adaptations of first party games haven’t rocked hard in the past, they have! It’s just not a sure thing.
As a huge fan of MotorStorm and MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, I’ll reserve my high hopes until I see realtime footage (or better yet a demo) of the game running on actual PSP hardware (I’ll be passing on the PS2 version myself.) Until then, I’d expect plenty of phenomenal looking teasers while we wait to see what actually gets delivered.
