A pall was cast over the collective gaming community with news that Microsoft’s benevolent (and altogether necessary) three year extended warranty expired today for launch day 360s.
If your, once spruce, launch day console is looking a bit peaky, then I’m sorry to say that you will have to dish out $119 for it’s next appointment at the RROD National Hospital for Infirm Heatsinks and Tropical Diseases. While the extended warranty technically should have been terminated in September, Microsoft, being a philanthropic mega-corporation, compassionately lengthened the warranty by five months.
Yes, from today you’ll have two options for resuscitating your beloved entertainment unit: phone up the fun folks at Microsoft and hand over $119, or head on over the Xbox.com support page and only pay $99. If you feel like bolstering Microsoft’s protuberant coffers, then the first option may be preferable, but if you’d rather hang on to an extra $20, then the latter option is for you.
Of course, paying nothing is the ideal, so we suggest that all launch day 360 owners do whatever they can to extend the longevity of their unreliable boxes (of the ‘X’ variety). Whether it’s muttering soft words of encouragement to them at twilight, or lavishly coating them in wet towels, we wish you the best of luck.

I guess you could always just get an Arcade bundle and switch the hard drives if your machine breaks down. Supposedly the new machines are less likely to break than the launch machines.
Er… I bought my 360 a mere 5 months ago, so I’m still in the clear. But I can’t imagine what horrible things this means for the poor souls who still own launch machines.
Best of luck, guys.
A guy I used to work with had is launch 360 RRoD on him. It wasn’t going to be covered by the warranty so he was in just this predicament. He ended choosing the third option, trading everything in and buying a PS3. Which is the most expensive option but I guess he couldn’t stomach giving Microsoft more money.
LOL!… the tags for this is “ps3″
Selling your launch console and getting an arcade is a good idea. Considering the Jasper chipset is supposedly supposed to cure the RRoD, it would save some money in the long run as opposed to sending the old console in, getting it fixed only for it to red ring again down the line.
My god, noone seems to get it. All you have to do is install the games that you play most, or buy a 120 gb drive and install all your regularly played games. There is a next to nothing chance that it will red ring then, because when it’s playing installed games it only uses one fan, which is why it’s so quiet.
