Here we go again, yet another “lets bastardize an iconic universe” movie and video game combo. Remember how great the X-Men and Transformers movie-tie in games were? Blocked out the painful memories? I don’t blame you. This time round it’s the movie tie-in game for the new G.I. JOE film that will have fans seeing a shrink so that they can cope with the horror.
Find out what G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra has in store for fans after the jump!
Yesterday Electronic Arts announced that a game based on the upcoming G.I. JOE film was in the works; shocking I know. Set to be released around the films August 7th release date, EA is promising the impossible to fans.
EA’s G.I. JOE game will, according to EA, allow players to be able to “re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series, and action-figure toy line.” Somehow I doubt that. If I can’t go through boot camp with Sgt. Slaughter, or help defend the Broadcast Energy Transmitter, then I’m going to have to call shenanigans.
Players will be able to take control of a dozen different characters AND the game will support single-screen co-op, which is code for “we really don’t give a damn, the game will sell anyway.”
Just like the new Transformers tie-in, the G.I. JOE game will arrive on all the current platforms, including mobile devices (WTF?!), except for the PC. It seems strange that the PC was left out, but since the chances of this game becoming a critically acclaimed hit are non-existent, I don’t think PC gamers will mind.
I’ve already ranted about why movie-tie in games are almost always crap pressed into a disc many times before, and my outlook has not changed. Just like X-Men, Fantastic Four, Superman and Transformers before it, the new G.I. JOE film will be a special effects orgasm wrapped in B level acting and D level writing/directing (Stephen Sommers is NOT the man!). The G.I. JOE game to go along with the film will be just as good as the tie-in games for the previously mentioned movies were; a total waste of money.
Just like the new Transformers movie and game tie-in, I very much want the new G.I. JOE combo to be great, I’m just unwilling to get my hopes up again. Unlike Hollywood, I learn from my mistakes. At least we’ll have Snake Eyes, and that’s enough to keep me from crying myself to sleep…for now.
Cobra LA LA LA LA LA! Ugh…

I think that this has FAIL written all over it, but I do haveto say that the Chronicles of Riddick is the exception that proves the rule – as much as I loved Pitch Black and its sequel that was good, but not as good, the tie-in game Escape From Butcher Bay is better, and Assault From Dark Athena should be even better…
EDIT: My captcha is “Church Bowling”… New sport, perhaps?
The sad part about people not going to see the movie and not buying the game is that execs won’t see it as “there wasn’t enough interest in bringing back the GI Joe franchise” instead of “woops, we really screwed this one up, we probably should have invested in talent.”
Wait…that’s Snake-Eyes….with a GUN….that just seems…..I dunno….wrong somehow.
Perhaps it’ll surprise us. Perhaps….
You can get $5 coupon off the game if you buy your movie tickets on Fandango. The offer is on their Facebook fan page. I found which local stores have the game in stock now using Milo.com and it shows the best prices too. http://milo.com/search?q=rise+cobra
