Can Ready 2 Rumble’s comeback save Wii boxing?

The Wii’s range of boxing games hasn’t exactly been strong. Boxing is one of the sole uses of the Wiimote I personally file under ‘remotely interesting’, and it’s a shame the track record has been rubbish. We’ve had Facebreaker (lame on every format, never mind the Wii) and the Boxing game on Wii Sports, which is fun with the family but just pitiful when played alone.

However, with a resurrection of Ready 2 Rumble around the corner, can the boxing genre be saved on the Wii? Check out a video after the jump!

If you haven’t played Ready 2 Rumble, you’ll probably not be sure what to expect. The original game – and its sequel, the appropriately titled Round 2 – forewent the seriousness of other boxing titles in favour of caricatured characters and celebrity spoofs; the sequel featured Michael Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal, boxing announcer Michael Buffer and Bill & Hillary Clinton, punching it out for the Oval Office.

After the franchise was abandoned by Midway, Atari scooped it up and are ready to release Ready 2 Rumble Revolution, and it looks like they’ve kept it pretty much unchanged. There’s over-the-top flurries, immature comedy and a bunch of parodied celebrities. How many can you spot?

The first two games were a blast so to see the series revived on what is, arguably, the ideal platform, is promising. It hits the stores in March 2009 and, seriously, I might buy it.
