Having been bombarded with a duo of Battlefield news (read: Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is in the works and Battlefield Heroes is aiming to release this quarter), yet more news of DICE’s popular franchise seemed an unlikely occurrence. Yet low probabilities be damned, because another entry to the nodal-point-capturing shmup* has been announced.
Check out the trailer, after the jump.
DICE has decided to bring a World War II Battlefield game to XBLA, PSN and PC this summer. Currently, three maps have been named and outed, so players can look forward to inserting high velocity lead pellets into their friends while trampling around Wake Island, Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. How many players you ask? No fewer than 24 I’ll have you know.

The first screenshot of Bad Company 2.
The interesting thing about Battlefield 1943 is that it’s built using the same engine as Bad Company, so graphics should not be an issue here and if DICE get the price point right (800
would be irresistibly cheap, but 1200
or even 1600
seems more likely), then I can see this game selling a lot of copies. But if it’s too successful then why would people bother with the more expensive Bad Company 2 later in the year?

I for one would bother because I enjoy both the WWII and modern settings. I am totally looking forward to this.
It’s like DICE has just stopped trying to think of anything new. It’s just sequel after sequel, without even an attempt to change the scenery. Also, DICE said to Gamespot that 1943 will play more like Bad Company than 1942. That’s great, except that if you want to remake 1942, it should play like 1942. Which leads me to ask: why remake it? BF1942 is a great game that still has a good online community. It’s aged enough such that pretty much any computer can run it, so what’s stopping people? What, you can’t play a game that was made before the brown and bloom movement of this gen?
Finally, what is with 24 players? I can understand it on the consoles (no dedicated servers, LOL), but slapping PC owners with that number is just insulting. 1942 pioneered 64 player battles SEVEN YEARS AGO. This isn’t progress, this is just chaining down a more capable platform by inferior ones.
Mark my words, 1943 will just be a bad rehash of 1942 with consoleitis with PURTY GRAWFIX.

@ Ha Ha Ha! Oh wow.
DICE stopped trying to think of anything new?
YOU. ARE. RETARDED.
Ever heard of “Mirror’s Edge”?
1. Mirror’s Edge was different, but still bad. Choosing between looking at your feet to know when to jump or the horizon to know what exact direction to go is bad game design. There’s a reason the most successful platformers have been in third person.
2. However bad Mirror’s Edge was, I feel you are the stubborn type. Allow me to refine my opening statement.

There we go. I agree.
