Shooters have become a very popular genre among the hardcore gaming community. Whether you’re blasting away other players in a Call of Duty match, or taking down Splicers in Bioshock, having a plethora of firearms at your disposal always seems to be a great deal of fun. It’s because of the popularity of putting a gun in players’ hands that I decided to revisit the Top Picks feature and list off my favorite guns featured in this generation of video games.

Disclaimer – Animathias is crazy, and therefore his opinions do not reflect those of Sarcastic Gamer, the Sarcastic Gamer Community, or 99.9% of those living on the planet Earth. Just throwing that out there, you’re probably not going to agree with these.

5. The Red Dragon (Fable 2) - The Red Dragon is a Pistol you receive from placing number 1 in the Shooting Gallery in Westcliffe. Sure, there are firearms and crossbows in Fable 2 that do more damage or have better augments in them, but I haven’t found any that shoot faster than this beauty.

It’s that rapid rate of fire that places the Red Dragon on this list. When you target an enemy and rapidly hit the Y button, you barely notice the reload, and you can decimate enemies in seconds. If your Marksman skill is high enough, you can still manage to pull of extraordinary headshots, but I have found no better firearm to push back a wave of baddies when they get close. It’s the equivalent of bringing an Uzi to a sword fight.

Runner Up: The Rammer - The Legendary Crossbow that is the Gargoyles’ treasure.

4. Needler (Halo 3) - The Needler?! That’s right. I chose this over the Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, SMG, Shotgun, Mauler, etc… Why? Because it’s so satisfying to fill your opponent with a number of bright pink needles and watch them explode in a pink cloud just to humiliate them. Sure, it’s awesome to take out your opponent with a few shots to the face with the Battle Rifle or with a quick one-two of a Shotgun blast and melee, but there is no more satisfying way to take out a baddie in a Halo 3 match than to fill them with needles and watch them go boom. Of course, sticking them with a grenade is pretty satisfying, but those aren’t firearms and therefore don’t qualify.

Runner Up: SMG - You might need a second weapon to kill someone, but it fires a lot of bullets very quickly.

The final 3 are found on page 2.

The Needler? C’mon, they stole the Injector from TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. And that was better because they properly exploded, not just dissipate into pink smoke. Pah.

(I was also relieved to read it wasn’t a “Dave’s drinks” style post; I was praying it wouldn’t just be “pistol, sub-machine gun, shotgun, rocket launcher, sniper rifle” or something to that effect :D )

Definately the P90 in any game it is in … but … as much as I liked the Gravity Gun – Half Life 2’s crossbow is frickin’ awesome. You fire that sucker at a line of baddies and the damn bolt goes right through them all and still pins them to the wall or whatever is behind them. LOVE that baby.

My personal favorite Halo 3 gun is the sentinal beam, even though they never include it in any actual maps.

my favorite gun has got to be the longshot sniper rifle from gears, and i love it for the same reasons that you love the M40A1 for, it takes precision, patience and timing to pull off that headshot

I’d have to say the crossbow was still the most awesome weapon from Half-Life 2.

Namely for the achievement I got for nailing a guy to the billboard with it. Also because it’s awesome.
