The Wii launched a little over two years ago; yet the console remains elusive at retail. Nintendo has upped production, but the mighty white box is still selling like crazy. The console shifted 2.04 million units in the States in November, which bested October’s impressive sales of 803,000.

With the Wii nabbing Amazon’s best-selling gaming product of 2008, it looks like the streak of dominance will continue well into the new year.

Nintendo saw strong year-end hardware sales, despite not having any triple-A titles release during the 2008 holiday season. Though, “Mario Kart Wii,” “Wii Fit” and “Wii Play” continue to sell well in America, the UK and Japan. “Wii Sports,” the popular pack-in game, remains a system seller.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the numerous milestones the console shattered last year. In October, the Wii’s install base reached 34.55 million, which surpassed the lifetime sales of the Nintendo 64 (32.9 million). As of Nov. 23, the little box of joy had sold 7 million units in Japan.

Despite suggestions that it is a fad, the Wii continues to disappear from retail shelves faster than fudge at a fat camp.  That is why the console’s surreal success is one of our top gaming moments of 2008.

What’s Numero Uno on our list?  Stick around to find out.
