There’s no doubt about it, we’ve had quite a few Metal Gear Solid 4 moments on our list. Rightfully so, as it was one of the top games of the year. One of the great things about MGS4 was the storytelling. I don’t mean the lengthy cutscenes. I mean the actual in-game stuff.  On particular stretch in Act 5 might have been on of the best examples, so far, in video game history of a game that made you feel what the character felt.

Well, kind of… Find out what I’m talking about, after the jump.

Things get pretty desperate for Snake and his team in the waning moments of Act 5.  People are dying, getting limbs hacked off and bleeding out.  Only one man can save them all, that man is Old Snake.

He’s got to save the day, but he’s got a stretch of tunnel that’s filled with deadly microwaves.  Why?  Who cares, it doesn’t really matter in the end. You’re Old Snake, you’re gonna die from a deadly virus anyway and your friends are dying.

It’s all up to you.

You’ve got to crawl through this tunnel by rapidly tapping the triangle button.  You move at a snails pace while your friends get chewed up by the bad guys.  You tap faster, hoping that this scene will be over soon… but it never ends… You tap faster.  Faster… You’re starting to get tired.  You switch hands, try different positions… It. Never. Ends. Things get desperate, your hands hurt and you just want this to be over… Here’s the video:

And then it ends. You’re relieved, your friends live and all you can think about was how friggin’ hard that was.

This was all perfectly choreographed by Kojima to get you to feel Old Snake’s desperation and for getting you to feel that, at least somewhat, puts this gameplay moment at #10 spot on our Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2008.

      That bit was absolutely crazy.

It’s funny, I thought Act 5 was disappointing at the time and afterwards I thought about it and realised how wrong I was…

that bit made me suffer, so i really sympathized with snakes struggle to the end of that tunnel. every time i reached the door at the end and it opened up to reveal even more tunnel, i almost cried lol

what about the boss fight after that scene. a manly fist fight on top of a tower. that was awesome

    • That section was completely unexpected and ultimately unforgettable (like many moments in the game.)

While it may not be the most visually impressive or fun level to play, Kojima did exactly what he set out to do… very few games have ever had an emotional impact on me yet SEVERAL parts of MGS4 managed to successfully pull it off.

    • Agreed. As much as I don’t like DOING that part of the game, I think it’s one of the more amazing parts of the game. No other game I’ve ever played has gone to such lengths to make you feel what the character is feeling.

y far, my favorite moment was Snake crawling through the microwaves, old, tired, exhausted yet moving just cause EVERYONE’s fate, their lives depended on him. Meryl, Johnny, Raiden, Mei Ling, Otacon, Mei Ling’s Crew. And Kojima made me feel tired too bashing the triangle button! That is probably the magnum opus scene of MGS4. What a powerful scene… wah. Kya baat hai.
