Sony and EA add some extensions to Home

Wowee. Home certainly is growing, almost to the point where I start to care. I’ve not touched the application in a couple of weeks because there’s not really anything to do at the moment. Maybe it’s just a European thing.

Anyway, Sony’s just released a patch with the first “corporate partner” space included, and EA have announced their plans to bring their sports franchises to their own Home space in the near future. All the info’s waiting for you after the jump.

First up is what PS3 Fanboy appropriately calls ‘[Home's] first real piece of content’: the Red Bull Air Race zone has gone live, accessible from the World Map on your Menu Pad. Once in the space you can hop into a Red Bull-adorned airplane and take to the skies in a race against the clock. There’s no leaderboards as of yet but I’ve had a little go and it’s great fun for 10 minutes or so, then you’re back to standing around doing nothing. Oh well. Fun while it lasted, I suppose?

Stateside, the Diesel clothes store and the Ligne Roset furniture store have opened their doors, a few weeks after Europe (genuine shock, please), so now American PSN users can get their hands on over-priced designer clothes and coffee tables – and then instantly regret it – too. Hurrah!

Meanwhile, EA have been kind enough to flood my inbox with yet more unwanted PR alerts; although this one’s a little more welcome than yesterday’s. The publishing giant’s first effort on the Home-front (is that a brilliant pun or what?) will be titled the “EA SPORTS Complex”. The EA SPORTS Complex (do you shout “sports”?) will obviously let like-minded sports games fans chat – and everyone else too – and check out leaderboards for the latest editions of every EA Sports franchise.

More intriguingly, you’ll be able to indulge in a number of multiplayer minigames based on the EA Sports lineup: my guess is that there will be Tiger Woods driving ranges and NBA slam dunk challenges among the activities available. As you’d expect from the original Home Square design (in Europe anyway) video screens will decorate the area and will play all sorts of EA Sports video content. EA are also promising further Home Spaces based on other franchises in the near future, but for now we’ll have to settle for the SPORTS Complex when it launches in the spring.

It’s nice to see Home developing into something more than a “stand around and do nothing/harass girls” application and hopefully we’ll see more themed spaces from other developers soon, to complement EA’s efforts (and Naughty Dog’s & Ubisoft’s too). I’ll personally be hoping that we see every last themed space in Europe sometime soon too; the Far Cry and Uncharted spaces are still mysteriously missing. Here’s hoping though, eh?

    • I got to check this stuff out, did some cart racing. They said this will be out in Q1 2009 but it will NOT feature known EA franchises… there WILL be EA franchise-specific spaces in the works, but they will be separate, not this Home space.
