I only recently began listening to podcasts. I didn’t even know the genre existed, or maybe I knew, but didn’t care, until after I became a part of the Sarcastic Gamer Podcast. Turns out, podcasts are actually a ton of fun, who knew? It was at about this time last year that I decided to take the plunge and subscribe to the 1Up Yours podcast. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions I ever made with my iPod.
And now it’s over.
Some simple musings and a heartfelt thanks to a great podcast, after the jump.
When I came aboard the 1Up Yours train, Luke Smith was leaving, or had just left. I was completely indifferent to the move. I found him to be an impish queen, who screeched and dick joked his way through each show. It was only later, actually during their very last show, that I learned to appreciate what he brought to the podcast. He is/was very good at keeping the other members, especially Shane in check and brought a lot of humor to the show. I understand what the haters were talking about now, in their complaints of the show after he left.
But I digress. 1Up Yours, with Garnett, John, Shane, Luke and Andrew, with a cast of other supporting characters is the definitive gaming podcast. When you think of a video game podcast, this is it. Two plus hours of dudes talking about video games. It was unfiltered fun and it worked because of their chemistry resting on a foundation of well thought out discussion and silliness that’s missing in most video game podcasts.
Since they started 1Up Yours, video game podcasts are everywhere. They litter the landscape like wreckage on a beach. Some pieces stand out, but for the most part, 1Up Yours brought it, week in and week out. Some have knowledge, but lack any type of entertainment value. For the most part, there will only ever be one “1Up Yours” and it will be missed.
Good luck to all that were a part of it. Your two hour spot in my life will be difficult to fill each week.
Thanks…

Well said, Lono. IMHO, 1up Yours was the definitive video game journalist podcast and will be sorely missed.
Nice use of a great Doors quote too.
Not to mention losing my EGM every month (great poo-time reading). But, it is sad to see 1up yours and the 1up show (video podcast) go away. And, yes, Luke Smith was an integral part of that show. I’ve been listening to them long before Luke left to work for Bungie. You can still catch all of these guys on different podcasts, and maybe an occasional reunion now and then. Luke Smith hosts the Bungie Studios podcast, Garnett Lee will continue the weekly podcast under the same 1up yours iTunes feed (but with new faces and a new name), and the rest of the 1up crew, including Dan Hsu, have started their own gig at Area 5 Media. Hope this never happens to the SG podcast ! Need my martini time !
listening to that last episode really shows how much they loved what they did.
Luke Smith says (to Lono): http://tinyurl.com/c9kuyg
LOL!
Huh? Is that even worth a LOL??? I’d give it a Meh.
I didn’t listen to the 1UP podcast because it was too long, but the IGN games podcasts are silly and fun as well(the Beyond podcast(playstation) had a drunken podcast at the end of last year) and I enjoy them. There’s a feed for all of them in Itunes and if you miss the Iup yours podcast then you’ll probably enjoy them.
