Peter Molyneux flaps his gums; rubbish comes out

Peter Molyneux is a never ending source of quotes and post material. The dude never shuts his yapper. When he isn’t pimping Lionhead Studios’ newest title or reviewing said title, the fabled game designer is talking about games. You know, titles like “Fable II” and the next Lionhead project that he continually teases, but refuses to reveal anything about.

Molyneux recently spoke with BBC News about the games he can’t wait to play in 2009. His list is rather…short.  In fact, it seems Molyneux is tougher to impress than our very own Rothbart.

The talkative game developer told the UK-based news service that he is not impressed by the current slate of games scheduled to release in 2009.

Next year, well, it’s all looking a bit dry. All the triple A titles came out this Christmas and while there is stuff in 2010 we can look forward to, off the top of my head I cannot think of anything next year that really excites me.

I have a lot of respect for Molyneux because he is passionate about the gaming industry and seems to genuinely care about the IP’s he creates.  However, I am shocked that he isn’t interested in a single game slated to release this year. Ever heard of “Ghostbusters: The Video Game” or “Brutal Legend”? What about “inFamous” or “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”?

Game selection is very subjective, but I haven’t heard any individual, outside of Molyneux, complain about a lack of games in 2009. I think the list is quite loaded. It includes “BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams,” “WWE Legends of Wrestlemania,” the next “Ratchet & Clank” game, “God of War III,” “Bayonetta,” “Dark Void,” “Killzone 2,” “Resident Evil 5″ and “Street Fighter IV.” Hell, Wii owners are wetting their trousers in anticipation of “MadWorld,” “The Conduit,” “Cursed Mountain” and “Punch-Out!!.” Also, we can’t forget darling downloadables “Fat Princess,” “Flower” and “Flock.” Granted, some of the aforementioned titles could slip into 2010, as some of them don’t even have concrete release dates yet.

I would continue naming games, but my list is already way too long. IGN recently posted updated release schedules for all the relevant platforms (the PlayStation 2 is still kicking). Feel free to check out the slates for the Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. PC gamers, you haven’t been forgotten.

Perhaps Molyneux doesn’t care about any of the aforementioned games. Maybe he is disappointed by the current slate of ‘09 titles. He is certainly entitled to his opinion. However, my opinion is that his opinion is absurd. 2009 looks like another great year for software. I personally can’t wait for March 13 to roll around, as I plan to purchase my first “Resident Evil” game. What can I say? I love to make a fashionably-late entrance.

Though I found some of Molyneux’s comments to be ludicrous, he did make some interesting points during the BBC News interview. For instance, he also questioned holiday releases and discussed the “price pressure” that could save gamers money. The article also features quotes from Will Wright, Richard Garriott and “Fatal1ty.” Click here if you want to check it out.

This is going to be a great year for gaming (especially pc-gaming) with games like Empire Total War DemiGod, BattleForge, The Godfather II,…

I’m on Peter’s side of the fence. With the exception of Bioshock2, there is not a title that I will 100% pre-order.

I’m not that excited either. Poor Molyneux gets a bad rep because he promised a revolution with Fable and instead delivered a great game. Yeah, he needs someone in PR to control his excitement when he talks to the media. All he said was he couldn’t think of any off the top of his head, though, not that there weren’t any.

Yeah…next year is a tad dry.

I agree with Molyneux for once,

Seriously Havok are you being sarcastic?

Do you think a man approaching 50 is going to get excited about yet another ratchet and clank, yet another street fighter, yet another Resident Evil. A WWF game ROFL

A man so obsessed with innovation is gonna have a lot better things to do with his time than play that long list of sequals you just read out.

One sequal I would get excited about Mr Molyneux though would be a Dungeon Keeper 3 or Syndicate 3 :)

    • Talanacao says:

I can only wonder why someone who makes RPGs for a living wouldn’t be excited by Dragon Age: Origins, though….

      Maybe it’s just the competition?

      Halo 3: ODST
      Halo Wars
      Splinter Cell: Conviction
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest
      Aliens: Colonial Marines
      Call of Duty 6

I’m set for now, and we haven’t even heard the secret lineup yet! I mean, Molyneux is a genius, but come on.
      =-/

I’m all for putting a muzzle on Molyneux, but I don’t see why you’re so broken up about this particular comment of his, Havok. I really don’t.

I mean, I disagree with his opinion that there’s nothing to be excited about in 2010, but… it’s just a disagreement. It’s not his usual obnoxious jaw-flapping about his next “masterpiece”. It’s just him being a somewhat picky gamer. So what?

    • Cornman89 says:

      Err… I meant in 2009. =/

    • Havok Saunders says:

      @ Cornman89

I am not broken up or even upset about his comment. His comments surprised me, that was all.

I’m actually quite excited about the coming year. Maybe if you only own a 360 your not to excited since they really haven’t annonced any games yet. I’m sure they will by E3 though. But I am pretty excited about Killzone 2, Res 5, InFamous, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 2, God of War 3, Mad World and Bioshock 2 and that is just the games of the top of my head. THis will be another busy year for me and another year that puts a hurting on my wallet.

O and I am not bashing the 360 just saying they haven’t really annonced anything yet for this year

    • Cornman89 says:

      @Havok

Ah. I see. Then, in that case, I misunderstood your intent completely.

Can’t exactly say I’m surprised at the comment, either, though. Molyneux seems like the kind of egomaniac who can’t enjoy anything unless he has a hand in its creation. =)
