Oasis: Guitar Hero’s good, but it’s not

It seems that non-gamers are forever at odds and ends with these fandangled interactive video thingies of the 21st century. Forbes recently reported on the head of Activision with extreme ignorance, and now Noel Gallagher of rock band Oasis has stepped up to the fore to make his opinion clear on Guitar Hero.

Well, when I say ‘clear’…see what I mean over the jump.

Last year Gallagher – the cantankerous brother of Liam and guitarist/vocalist in Oasis – was all too happy to praise Guitar Hero, waxing lyrical in such memorable soundbites as,

“I’d rather that genre of videogames than somebody getting their f***ing head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting f****d by a goblin up the arse with a laser.”

I’m not sure what sort of games he’s been playing, because I’ve never had that happen to me. What’s more, it’s not exactly an outright approval of games, is it? He seems to be saying it with the same sort of pleasantries as a man given a choice as to which limb he’d like hacked off: “I’d rather you took off my arm instead of my leg, but I’d much rather walk away with all of my limbs intact, thank you very much.”

Anyway, Gallagher remarked at the time that “[putting] little plastic guitars into kids’ hands…fires their imaginations[;] I think that’s a good thing. It’s harmless fun, innit.” In other words, Noel looked down on Guitar Hero, and it was good. That would be that then. We had a fairly popular music star praising a fairly popular music game, and that was nice.

Was nice, anyway. Noelie’s changed his mind and decided, in his delicate, dulcet tones, that “playing a guitar is not a f***ing videogame.” Of course it’s not, that’s what Guitar Hero is for. In fairness, he said in full:

“When I meet kids I always say to them playing a guitar is not a f*cking videogame, there is no level to get to. You’ll never master it and you’ll never complete the game.”

I’m pretty aware of that…come to think of it, who isn’t? Those of us who play guitar didn’t start playing it because it’s a game; we learn because we got satisfaction out of being able to play a musical instrument. Maybe it’s not even serious ability, but just playing for fun. If we want some sort of instant result and victory from “playing” guitar, we play Guitar Hero.

To be fair to him again, he did go on to say that Guitar Hero is still a good way to introduce people to music and possibly to playing an instrument. This is where I’m confused; just which way is he swinging? Does he support it or not, especially since he’s admitted to having never played it at all? I need ANSWERS!

…But until we get them, here’s a funny video of a crazed fan attacking him on stage. So there’s at least one thing to chuckle about in this article. Enjoy!

Sarcastic gamer do you realise sarcasm is the lowest form of humour don’t you? Oh of course you do because your pond life, the lowest life form on the planet. What a pathetic dig at one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Ha ha let’s all laugh at a man being assaulted

If you do not like this site, the content of this site, and the opinions of the members on this site, then do not come to this site; but do not criticize what is written. As a matter of fact, get off this site, but not before you get off your high horse.

      And I’m not being Sarcastic…

      Great article Yamster

    • Davinchi says:

Best OASIS video ever!!! (or the only good one…?)

See kids? that’s how your brains ends up if you do drugs! (or is it if you don’t?)

    • Mike says:

      HOORAAAH!!!!

Good one, that roflcopter was inbound and coming in fast, boom!

As for jamie baker, sarcasm is awsome. So you can fag off.

    • Yamster says:

Damn! I’m sure stirring up a lot of controversy lately with a whole lotta nothing…and my CAPTCHA is broken! It’s putting out 3 words!

Jamie Baker. No-one is laughing at one of the greatest songwriters of all time getting assaulted.

The man in the video is Noel Gallagher.

Now I like Oasis. At least I used to. But to claim them (and Noel) as some of the greatest? You’re a bit off.

And come on Noel, and his brother Liam, are known for shooting their mouths off. The article draws attention to the fact that Noel seems to have two opinions about Guitar Hero and gaming in general, and is unable to say anything eloquently about either.

And Sarcasm may be the lowest form of humour, but if deployed correctly, it can be one of the most devastating. A good stand up knows their audience, and you don’t do surrealism in a working man’s club…

@ Keybearer :Massive Lulz for the intentional or unintentional oasis reference, & i owe apologies for the slant on the sarcastic gamer site in general .
Looking through the site( Which i had not done before posting in haste) i find it to be a rather funny and clever gaming site.

My opinion which i am entitled to was hasty and i take it back. @ Yamster I give apologies to you too, you have the right to criticize and give an opinion on a Noel Gallagher quote/quotes and not be subject to a whiny & childish! response from myself.

I am being most genuine in my apologies and if any of it comes across as disingenuous it is not meant to be, I guess i must be getting as grumpy as Mr Gallagher senior himself.
And as for being one of the greatest song writers of all time! for many of my generation he is. Regards

lol, i love oasis but i have to say that vid is F***ing funny, i like GH to. and i play genuin guitar so this argument is kinda futile.

I’m with Yamster. I’ve played guitar for years, but I have GH 2, 3, and Rock Band in my house. On a trip to a local music shop, I was playing with an amp that the guy was trying to sell me when a Dad brought in his two sons looking for a “starter” guitar for them. They were both adamant that it be a Gibson. If you don’t know anything about guitars, a Gibson is an expensive “starter.” I had to chuckle, though, because I automatically identified their source of inspiration for wanting to play a Gibson guitar.

In an interview yesterday with the frontman of Buckcherry, a local radio personality asked him about Rock Band and if he thought it was good or bad for music. They both agreed that it has inspired kids to try instruments as well as exposing them to a lot of great music they might not have listened to, otherwise.

I think Noel’s reference to the goblin-laser-humping was a rare Japanese port of Leisure Suit Larry…

Glad to know that you enjoy the site, and that you give apologies to the site; I highly regard this site (though I know everyone is entitled to their opinions of it). I believe you are genuine and welcome you to Sarcastic Gamer ^.^
      Happy gaming.

      @ Ya-mster sux

He obviously knows what he’s talking about if he gives two opinions that contradict each other…
How about you show some respect to the members of this site and their opinions before you get all high and mighty…
This will be a reference to Oasis: Get off your high horse!
It is you who dissapoints me and you who brings shame to this site, Ya-mster sux; disgrace…

    • Ya-mster sux says:

      the article and his ‘Puteria’

    • Yamster says:

Oh, you know Noel Gallagher confessed to having never played Guitar Hero at all, right? He has no right to voice an opinion on something he’s never seen.

    • SMLM says:

lol oasis sucks balls lets see how many comments im going to get for that one! =]

    • SMLM says:

      @Ya-mster sux
Everybody in this world is intitled to their own opinion. Noone is making you read this article and i understand that you may have been attracted to it because it had the name of a band you like but at the first sign of it being negative perhaps you should have closed the page and gone somewhere else because as everyone should know where there is “talent” there is going to be negativity. coming on here and leaving a comment with the title name of “Ya-mster sux” makes you no better then what you percieve the person being negative as.

Next time you are reading an article on a web based review site maybe you should prepare yourself for inevitable negativity because in this world there is always going to be someone who dissagrees.

You shouldn’t let the opinion of one person change your outlook on an entire group I.E. yamster or this site. just relax take a breath and dont take life so serious.

      Kind Regards.

    • Ya-mster sux says:

ok. Even with all that my only point or reason for replying was the usage of the video.I think it was inapropiate under the context yamster used.I agree with the vast mayority of the article and i tougth it was great until “…But until we get them, here’s a funny video of a crazed fan attacking him on stage. So there’s at least one thing to chuckle about in this article. Enjoy!
which in my opinion…and any other reasonable person would agree to say that wasnt necersary or apreciated. That was my whole ager respect Yamster which in my opinion is a fine writter but in this time he exceeded.
thanks and please watch it next time you write about a “a crazed fan attacking ” .
