Killzone 2 hearts Europe, shocks me

Wow. Sony have swept me off my feet. No sooner had they climbed into the top 40 of our Top Gaming Moments of 2008 by being rubbish in Europe, they have gone and done something Eurocentric. This time they’ve gone and shafted the Americans instead, by making them pre-order Killzone 2 before they can download a demo of the game; we European folks will be able to try the game before it’s out with no such restrictions.

Maybe Sony are just evening the odds a little, since it’s on pretty much every other occasion the European consumer base loses out. All the info after the break.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed that Europe will receive a demo of Killzone 2 before the game itself is released sometime in February. SCEE told VideoGamer.com that the demo would be released on the European PlayStation Stores in the “normal manner”: presumably this means “like any other demo” and not “months overdue”.

The Americans, however, will not receive the demo in the “normal manner”. If any American K2 enthusiasts (Frawlz) are achingly desperate to try the game out before it hits the shelves, they’ll need to put down a pre-order deposit with GameStop, with codes going out from February the 3rd onwards, 3 weeks before the game’s release on the 27th.

A date for the European demo is unconfirmed, although I’m hoping it would be February the 5th at the earliest (the first Thursday after the Gamestop codes go out). Then again, with no European release date for Killzone 2 itself confirmed, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the demo released after American gamers get their mitts on the full game. Sony are Sony after all.

Since Sony are Sony, you must wonder what they’re thinking when it comes to organizing a marketing strategy. How on earth are you going to convince people to buy your new game if you wont even let them try it without promising to buy it first? Save for the few beta testers who already know it’s awesome (hello) most people are considering Killzone 2 based on hype alone, and it’d be an understatement to say Killzone 2 is nothing but hype, hype, hype.

Would the promise of a demo convince you to pre-order the game? Or will you create a European account, American gamers – since you’ll have had no use for one until now – and just grab the demo from there? I know what I would do, and it doesn’t involve my wallet.

    Just a little tip for anyone;

You can create new PSN accounts and select the country in the process, meaning it connects to their store.

This way the americans can connect to our store and download it. i use it all the time. I’ve got one Japanise account and one American, and then my normal UK one.

Only thing you can’t do is buy stuff, or atleast, it hasn’t accepted my british credit card on the american store lol.

Stupid americans. They get EVERYTHING before us and they complain about one demo that they dont get and we do. They just need to remember who created their race and country..thats right US!

I’m pretty sure they sorta broke away from Britain with the Declaration of Independance, and created their own country. Duuurrrr.

first BladeTrinity chill dude no need to get angry lol.

second great news to my Ps3 owners in Europe. I am pre ordering from GamStop anyways so this was never a big deal to me in the first place.

    Blade trinity: I don’t think anyone’s complained yet :)
This is good but I bet that we’ll get a later release date.
Also ensemble are giving us europeans a little love by giving us Halo wars on Feb 27th, 1 day after japan and several before america.

Maybe it’s because Sony’s tired of the US being 360 country, and FINALLY realized they made the most of their turnover in the EU, due to the Euro higher value. A 59.99$ game is sold not even 59.99€ but even 69.99€, I won ‘t let you do the calculations : 59.99$ is 44.20 € while 69.99€ is 95$… It had to take the PS3 in the US being looked down vs. the proudly american 360 AND the loss of $$$ value…
I’ll add that the presence of the UK in Europe (and I’m french, btw) might be involved, as 30-40% of the european market is there, and video games have a very important place in the brits’ life. Plus they speak english, as the americans, so no need for localization costs. (or little for non english speaking countries). France and Germany are not very little markets either…
UK + France + Germany alone = 207M ppl (Europe = more than 700M). Somebody at Sony’s must have finally done its researches on the internet. will that be the beginning of a trend for PS3 games? I still doubt so, but you never know.
