I ponder the ridiculous possibilities of the next Mortal Kombat

File this under completely expected, but “Mortal Kombat” co-creator Ed Boon has revealed that he is indeed working on a new game in the popular brawling franchise. With Midway currently attempting to claw its way out of financial purgatory, it should come as no surprise that the company is once again turning to its flagship IP. Though, since “Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe” launched last fall, I wouldn’t expect to see this new “Mortal Kombat” for quite some time. I guess it is never too early to prepare for the future. I just hope that Midway has a future.

As I began conceiving this article, a thousand possible crossovers raced through my mind. Boon didn’t reveal anything about the upcoming title, but that won’t stop me from speculating.

1) “Mortal Kombat vs. Castlevania”

Alright, so this one is not really that ridiculous. After all, Konami did release “Castlevania Judgment” last November. However, I wanted to ease you into this; this seemed like an appropriate first choice. On one side you have the vicious denizens of the “Mortal Kombat” universe; on the other you have the sexually-questionable characters from the famed monster-slaying franchise. I think Boon’s baddies would have the advantage, but the “Castlevania” franchise does have some deceptively-ferocious females.

2) “Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct”

A fairly obvious choice, but rather appropriate considering the high demand for a “KI” revival. This is probably the most balanced pairing on the list, as both sides boast numerous merciless combatants. Who would you side with: Glacius and Fulgore or Scorpion and Sub-Zero?

3) “Mortal Kombat vs. ClayFighter”

Oh nostalgia, you keep me young at heart. As a child, I loved the original “ClayFighter.” The game didn’t take itself too seriously and that always made me smile. It won’t be remembered as a top-notch brawler, but “ClayFighter” definitely had a lot of charm. In addition to its Claymation visuals and comically-outlandish violence, the cartridge was packed with a plethora of parodies. Chief among them was Blue Suede Goo, an Elvis impersonator. “ClayFighter 63 1/3,” a sequel released for the Nintendo 64, actually featured character-specific Claytalities.

4) “Mortal Kombat vs. WWE”

The “Smackdown vs. Raw” franchise is another series that has become a bit stale in recent years. What better way to inject some life into the aging series than to pit its brightest stars against the darkest souls of Midway’s popular brawler? Also, who better to combat the demonic and tortured beings of the “Mortal Kombat” universe than a bunch of oily men and women in revealing spandex outfits? Fans? Swords? Ha! The Legend Killer scoffs at these meager weapons. Fear the RKO.

Mortal Kombat vs Super Smash Brothers Brawl? Who wouldn’t want to do a finisher to Mario? Final Smashes’ could be made the same as Fatalities.

UK teletext thing… GameCentral has announced today that Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe sold 1.8m copies according to Midway.

Goes on to say that it (Midway) is already hard at work on a follow up. But it is not clear whether this will be a crossover or not.

Mortal Kombat vs. Killer Instinct sounds pretty cool and evenly balanced, also, Ed Boon says his dream was to have Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter which would be awesome, and a money maker, and can even go back to an m rated game
