EA Sports’ Upcoming Home Space

We got a chance to check out the upcoming EA branded Home Space.  It’s an EA branded sports area with cart racing, golf, and Texas Hold’em Poker (I still don’t understand how some folks consider poker a sport, but that’s for another day.)

Read on for details of the EA Sports Home Space…

While the focus of the demonstration was the non-game-branded areas, we were able to glean from our time with the EA rep that several of the EA Sports teams have game-specific plans in the works and that the EA Sports area is not going to conflict with their areas.  While this leaves us little concrete information, it was interesting that a golf area was present.  Apparently we won’t be seeing a Tiger Woods 2010 Home Space this year.

Like the Red Bull plane races, the EA Sports Home Space allows spectators to watch the activities taking place around them.  If you’re in the cart races, others can watch your race from a balcony above the track.  If you’re playing poker, others can walk around the game and watch.

An interesting comment by the EA rep gave me the impression that they plan on creating an EA Sports specific Home “hub” for lack of a better word and as they progress, more of the arenas visible in the distance will be real destinations within Home.  While I realize the EA rep’s job was to make the EA Sports Home Space seem worthwhile, he actually sounded like there were exciting things in the works that he couldn’t divulge.  Either he’s just good at his job, or we’ve got some more surprises coming our way.

I played the cart racing (by myself since the site isn’t technically live yet) and for a mini-game, it was pretty decent.  The golf wasn’t available for play as the rep said they were “still tweaking it for playability reasons.”  I’m curious to see what they’re ultimately able to do with their Home Space.  Due Q1 2009, they’ve still got a little bit of time to work on it but if they ultimately do pull off their entire EA Sports “complex” as individual Home Spaces, I could easily see this being a destination for a lot of sports game fanatics in the near future.  I just hope we see some compelling content in this platform-exclusive medium.
