Coming to a headrest near you: Playstation 2

ces_sponsor_bar3audiovoxps2Audiovox was showing off their in-car Playstation 2 setups at CES this past weekend.  I got a few minutes to try it out and what more can I say, it was like playing a Playstation 2 on a monitor mounted on the back of a headrest…  okay, I kid, it was nicer than that.

Read on for more impressions…

Audiovox have a couple different models to offer with one including a display and one intended to use an existing display.  With the plummeting prices of portable in-car DVD systems (that often include auxiliary inputs) it’s no surprise that they would want to offer something to leverage existing displays.

The first thing that caught my eye was the controller on display.  It appeared to be an official Playstation 2 controller yet it was unlike any controller I’d seen before, particularly in terms of the buttons in the middle.  It has the traditional Select and Start buttons but is joined by a Vibration button and a Mode button in addition to a light labeled FORCE LINK.  That sounds a bit brutal to me… if the PS2 doesn’t voluntarily link, simply push the MODE button until you force link it to the controller?  I have no idea… it doesn’t sound pleasant.

Okay, the Playstation 2 isn’t exactly cutting edge technology but it does offer hundreds of great games at reasonable prices and when you’re on a long road trip, having distractions to keep the kids from going stir crazy are worth their weight in gold.  The base model offered from Audiovox starts at $200.  Considering a retail Playstation 2 is still $129, that seems a fair markup for making the thing work (well) in the car.  In my hands-on time with Ratchet & Clank, it took about 3.4 seconds for me to forget I was playing the game on a headrest and get fully absorbed into the game.

If this unit proves reliable in the car, this looks like a low-cost no-brainer for in-car entertainment for the kids (or me if you’d like to take me on your family vacations, email me at rothbart [at] sarcasticgamer [dot] com.)

well since the ps2 is 6-7 years old now, Audiovox should have made this for a next gen console and people would enjoy it the same amount

Ooooh I’d have to teach the kids to drive so I could ride in the back of the car…sweet!

Well, you do know that normal head rest monitors for the cars allow you to plug in a normal A/V input right?

So this is not really something cool and actually, I don’t know why they would waste sow room space showing that.

I know my friend has his 360 hocked up to his car.

    *Hooked, not Hocked, sorry.

@Gir15: Well the PS2 is CONSIDERABLY smaller than the PS3 or 360 and its games are cheaper (not sure about you, but I don’t want my $60 games floating around in the back seat getting wedged in between the seats or getting stepped on, $20 games are less of a risk.) Also, the power requirements of a PS2 are a fraction of the other machines.

@djdsf: But these are nice, compact enclosures (not simply a PS2 with cords dangling) and you don’t have to worry about power inverters, etc. At $200, this is worth not having to kludge something together. It looks nice and isn’t especially conspicuous. Also, I mentioned in the article that a lot of people already have existing displays with inputs… did you read that part? ;)

I did, but I figured I needed an opening to bash on them for wasting space. apart from that, my friend actually had some power converter thing, some extra batts installed and the input aux box all hidden in the back with a nice little trap door to get to the cables.

But I will take your word for it regarding it’s coolness.

Maybe you didn’t realize that controller is not an official Sony PS2 controller. That’s why it looks different. It is made by a company called Katana.

BTW the PS2 is now 9 years old.

I stumbled across one of these controllers and it has the official PS logo on it. As far as I can remember, only officially licensed hardware was allowed that logo.
