CES: Killzone 2 Single Player Impressions

Although CES isn’t known as a “gaming conference” both Sony and Microsoft had impressive  booths dedicated to exclusive titles coming out for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2009. One of the big daddy exclusives that will be gracing our presence in February 2009 is, of course, Killzone 2 and I spent about an hour on the first two levels and I’ll tell you all about it, after the jump.

My absolute first impression of Killzone 2 is that I thought that it could be the best looking video game ever made.  Period.  The game is strikingly good looking. From character models to facial animation, everything is top notch, which is important as the graphical prowess goes along way toward dressing up an otherwise by the book shooting experience.

I really don’t mean “by the book” in a derogatory way.  Most shooters are all the same, with different color paint and a different “hook” like a cover system or crazy weapons, etc. Killzone 2’s hook, if it has a hook, is just how darned impressive the game looks.  The visceral way you move about the environment, with every detail dripping with extra care, from your reload animation to descending ladders, nothing has been left out.  It’s these details that give you a sense of presence in the game that draws you in and keeps you playing and wanting more.

As far as the gameplay itself, the default controls leave a lot to be desired.  As has become standard on exclusive shooters on the PS3, the default “fire” button is frustratingly set to R1, with R2 for grenades.  Even more awkward is that the L2 button is mapped to their cover system, a la Gears of War, but that isn’t the frustrating part.  The frustrating part is that when you “pop” up to fire on an enemy, you then have to click the left stick to zoom, making things just a tad more complicated in an intense firefight, which is basically all the time in the game. The options menu did not offer a more “Call of Duty 4″ type control system, so I made due.

As far as the numerous complaints about the horizontal and vertical sensitivity that I have read, I did experience, however, that was easily rectified by dialing down the sensitivity in the  options menu.  Problem solved.

More gameplay and final word on the next page.

      Regarding your ‘complaint’ about the c0ntrol scheme not being more like CoD, that was a deliberate design choice by the developers. They wanted to give the controls a bit more of a tactile feel, and the not being able to pop in and out of zoom went to achieving that goal by cutting down on people running and sniping at the same time, as well as popping out of cover already zoomed.

      I dont get the ‘the default “fire” button is frustratingly set to R1, with R2 for grenades. ‘ comment. I MUCH prefer R1 for shooting. I have to say , i think the R2 control scheme has been my most comfortable.

      @rbanke
      Yeah R2 had the most comfortable control scheme for me too, but the only thing I didn’t like was that L2 was used for sprint and crouch, which didn’t always do what you wanted. Lono where’s this “next page” you speak of? I don’t see a link to it ;)

      The best looking videogame ever? Evidently you have never played Crysis on High. Mind-blowing.

      I don’t care how good a game looks, sounds or anything else if the control scheme is nuts. At least let me customize the control layout. Most shooter out there use a COD/Halo type of scheme with tweaks depending on the game. And that makes most people out there familiar with this type of layout. I’m all for games trying to be different from their competition, but in the way of the content…not the controls, that just ruins the experience.

      This game looks amazing, but WHY HAVE THEY MADE THE R2 AND L2 BUTTONS FEEL LIKE TRIGGERS, AND NOT USE THEM TO FIRE AND AIM, LIKE ON 360?! Surely it would make the game better. But yes, it looks just about ready to blow everyone away this February.

      FYI i was in the beta and you could map your contrills to mimic cod4’s exactly, the only slight annoyance being that L1 scope was a click on click off mechanism rather than hold when it’s needed, but as jacob pointed out that’s a design choice. They may not have had control options on your demo, but they should have in the full game as they had them in the beta and it made my experience far more enjoyable.

      Also, something completley unrelated, when your clip is getting low, the last 10 or so shots make a slightly different noise, signifying your low ammo, i just thought that was hella cool and useful when i noticed it.

      I feel your pain regarding the control scheme. Not sure if KZ2 lets you but It makes me mad when a game doesn’t let you fully re-configure the controls, maybe its time SG lobied all the game developers and demaded that fully configurable controls returned to gaming.

      Killzone is my main “in your face xbox!” games of the moment. Is it the end of Feb already?!

    • With the guns, seems terrile.
