this kind of news is incredibly depressing. That happened so fast!

God I hope nothing like that ever happens to sarcastic gamer… cut down on the content if you have to… ask for donations… idk… just don’t let it happen to this website D:

1up is gone? What the hell?! And on top of that EGM went under? ugh. I feel like I need to have a week of mourning.

It really sucks because I had JUST gotten into the 1up show. I suppose that it’s good that I discovered sites like Sarcastic Gamer so that I’m not stuck relying on IGN….

UGO is being pegged unfairly by people that don’t understand the full situation and are speculating and pointing fingers *face palm* Hey Yamster, you got 2.5 million I can borrow in this economy to hire those guys – maybe start a new site? I will need a little extra for bandwidth costs and such with no way of making money.
Someone at UGO is speaking out about this, and it sucks to hear that a guys like Rusty and Rosenberg from UGO’s gamesblog are dealing with unfair hate.

With the exception of the 1Up show I never had any interest in 1Up.

Will be interesting to see what happens with all the staff that got fired. Will they try and make a jump to another big name like Jason Ocampo when he quit Gamespot after Gerstmann-man gate, will they form their own website ala Giant Bomb (or just join the site) or will they just end up crossing sides and going into PR.

In an ideal world Ryan O’Donnell and Matt Chandronait would go to IGN and make a show with them. While I enjoy the content of the 1Up Show, I found the people on it mostly irritating so filling it out with the IGN editors would be an improvement. But if I’m realistic it won’t happen, despite having a video team and Jessica Chobot, IGN never really seem to have shown interest in the idea.

Second best option seems to be an independant site based around the 1Up show concept. Would be a good chance to do more of the specials they do occassionally, like getting a group of designers around a dinner table.

Wow, I’m really gonna miss those podcasts maybe they’ll get together and keep doing it on their own. I do think other sites have taken their place and do a better job at it, ahem….Kotaku. 1up.com was never the place I went to for news they just had a really good podcast team. If they could have transferred their personalities over to the magazine I think I would have actually subscribed to it. Well maybe Egon was right ala Ghostbusters “Print is dead”

Well, Giantbomb seems to be quite the place for people that were once part of big gaming websites. Hopefully some of the 1up guys will join everyone that left Gamespot.

Clarifications have been made surrounding EGM’s termination; upon closer inspection of sources I’ve realised that EGM was not involved in the UGO deal and was scrapped by Ziff Davis Media independently. Apologies.

I’m just puzzled as to where UGO got enough money to buy them from. I have never even heard of them while 1up is considered to be ‘up there’ with the likes of IGN and Gamespot.

Sarcastic Gamer is indie. Giant Bomb is indie. 1up was a corporate website filled with passionate, talented, entertaining writers, and I think UGO made a mistake by letting them go.

But operating for over 20 years, ZD was never a scrappy indie publisher, and 1up definitely used ZD’s corporate resources to make its impact.

They didn’t buy EGM, the magazine was not part of the deal, hence it’s demise and the final issue hitting stores. Proofreading and fact checking must not be your thing, though.

I can name one person from UGO, Wombat of the CAGcast… oh wait, they fired him a week ago. Nevermind, no one to name.

Apparently UGO just wants the shiny domain name since they fired and canceled everything that made 1up, 1up. The worst part is they even say in their announcement that 1up was all about the personalities. The personalities that they fired.
