E3 2008 was a landmark moment for Sarcastic Gamer. Not because the multi-day event was incredibly memorable, but because this was the first year that our motley crew was invited the industry trade show. Doc and Dave hit the show floor determined to play as many games as they could.
Join me after the jump, as I remember some of the most sarcastic moments of E3 2008.
This year’s show might have been a bit less glamorous than previous ones, but there was still a ton of great games to play. The boys got to spend some time with “Fallout 3,” “Prince of Persia,” “Far Cry 2” and “Tom Clancy’s HAWX.” They also met up with Chet from Valve to chat about the studio’s zombie apocalypse game, “Left 4 Dead.”
However, it wasn’t all fun and games. There were press conferences to attend. Doc and Dave were on hand for a number of company media briefings, during which the industry titans showcased the most prominent games in their portfolios. Microsoft announced its new partnership with Netflix and dropped the news that “Final Fantasy XIII” would release for the Xbox 360. Sony showed off its new digital video store and debuted the first official “God of War III” teaser trailer. Nintendo…well, Nintendo disappointed. Though the company revealed new peripherals like Wii MotionPlus and the WiiSpeak microphone, its media briefing failed to satisfy core gamers. It was a good thing that Doc and Dave stayed in bed.
Unfortunately, the rest of the crew was stuck watching from the sidelines. Though, admittedly, we did have our fair share of fun. Lono, Yamster, Rothbart, Eoco and yours truly live blogged the GameSpot broadcasts of the Sony and Nintendo press conferences. Sadly, those conversations will never see the light of day, as they were filled with numerous naughty words and much Nintendo bashing. However, we didn’t just sit around and make fun of “Wii Music.” The stuck-at-home team delivered news as it broke on the show floor. It nearly killed us, but we managed to cover the final “Rock Band 2″ set list, the announcement of “Resistance: Retribution,” the reveal of “Wanted: Weapons of Fate” and tons of other newsworthy happenings.
All in all, I would say that Sarcastic Gamer’s first trip to E3 was a rousing success. The crew played some games, mingled with industry insiders and didn’t get kicked out in the process. A successful injection of sarcasm is the reason that our first trip to E3 is number 95 on our list of the top 100 gaming moments of 2008.
