2008-91

Animal Crossing, a game for the Wii and DS intended for children. It’s like a PG rated version of second life, or the sims. You run around and live your life with your Mii, taking it for walks so you can work on your cardio. Don’t want you Mi getting fat do you?

It seems like a lame non-offensive game right? Wrong!

Well, 14 media copies of the older version (along with the new one, City Life) were sent out to 14 websites, we weren’t one of them. In that version, as you made your way through the world, you meet a sheep. This sheep is like no other sheep in the history of mankind. The sheep is racist. From the moment you start talking to it, the N bombs start to fall. Needless to say, a stink was raise and Nintendo was shocked and claimed they had no idea.

“Previously played copies of the 2005 DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent to 14 members of the media to demonstrate the ability of players to transfer items to the new Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii. We regret that an offensive phrase was included without our knowledge via a wireless function that allows user-generated catchphrases to spread virally from one game to the next. This version is limited to 14 copies created for media review purposes only and is not available at retailers. We sincerely apologise for the incident and are working with media who received the game cards to return them to Nintendo immediately.”

The first ever racist sheep is the reason why Animal Crossing’s Offensive Language is #91 one of our top gaming moments of 2008.
