When someone says their game is finished you expect it to be…well, finished. Unfortunately, that was not the case with Fable II. Delve into this woeful tale of missing items and launch day patches after the jump.

One of Fable II’s ‘revolutionary’ features was its co-operative play. Gamers all around the word would be able to see their Fable II-playing friends as floating incandescent circles, with the option of inviting said friends into their game for some team work slathered fun. But all was not well in Lionhead world with the announcement that co-op play would not make the game’s launch. Oh noes!

The functionality would instead take the form of a patch, with the Gamerscore Blog saying it was scheduled for a week after launch. Yet, in an interview, Peter Molyneux stated that co-op play would indeed make launch. What a perplexing contradiction this was. Luckily the patch did make day 1 and everyone lived happily ever after. That is, apart from those who had pre-ordered the collector’s edition (and the people that actually tried the co-op mode).

Yes, in the end the Fable II collector’s edition was a bit disappointing. Due to ’supply chain issues’ the adorable miniature Hobbe figure, premium cuboidal box and extra DLC didn’t make it in time. Fortunately a price cut did, with the ‘collector’s’ edition costing $69.99 in the USA and £39.99 in the UK.

Crisis averted!

The mixture of trepidation and relief with the Fable II launch landed this story a prime place in our top 100 gaming moments of 2008.
