Sometimes there is a game that gets a kind of “super buzz” among the gaming community for reasons that I simply cannot understand. This next spot on our list is a title that had a semi-decent Metacritic rating of 72, cool environments and good co-op, but wasn’t exactly a show stopper. That is of course, if you don’t live in Japan.
Find out just how much Japan loves giving Monster Hunter’s their Freedom for a 2nd time after the jump!
With an estimated 6 million PSP’s in Japan, Capcom has reported over 1.5 million in retail sales just in it’s first month of launch. These are Japaneese sales only. That’ss pretty impressive. We’re talking 1 in 4 Japanese PSP owners went out and bought Monster Hunter Freedom 2 at, or near launch. Not too mention having a PSP title sell so well, so quickly. Now, it has sold over 2.15 million copies.

The game itself helped push PSP sales up big time. The PSP even started outselling the DS back in April (380,867 to 169,911). Despite coming out in ‘07 Monster Hunter Freedom 2 continued to rack up sakes in ‘08 and bump up the amount of PSP owners significantly.
Co-Op in Japan must be incredible!
With Monster Hunter Freedom Unite due to arrive in Q2 ‘09, it’s a pretty safe bet that at least one PSP series will be bringing in the big bucks for the foreseeable future. I still don’t get it though. In fact, something about those pictures above is starting to creep me out a little.
The continued success of Monsters Hunting Freedom Twice and its major impact on both PSP and software sales is why Monster Hunter Freedom 2 reigning supreme in Japan comes in at number 77 in Sarcastic Gamers Top 100 Moments of 2008!

So the fact that it’s doing so well over in japan is a big thing? Pretty much everyone that I know that has played Monster Hunter loves it.
Most people probably see it at the store and pass it off as a pokemon rip-off or something.
