We’re all familiar with Cliffy B, and how much he doesn’t shut up about things. We all know he’s over-hyped, and brash, and is generally worshiped as some sort of demigod within the gaming community. The thing is, we didn’t really know this until earlier this year, following the Games Developer Conference in 2008 when he stormed on stage to unveil Gears of War 2.
Find out what happened after the jump. Not after the jump took place, but after the jump on this post. The link to the right there. Go.
The Microsoft conference at GDC ‘08 was lacking in any sorts of Gears 2 info for the most part – which, obviously, is what everyone wanted to hear about – until about halfway through, when a surprise trailer for the game rolled to the delight of the crowd. For most, that would be enough to promote a brand new game. Maybe the producer would step onto the stage for a bit and speak for a while, and then walk off just as uneventfully.
Of course, this is Cliffy B we’re talking about. Skip to the one minute mark on this video to see how he took it just that little bit further just because he can.
Now, y’see, that sort of thing’s a “symbol” of what Cliffy B apparently stood for if you believed the hype that surrounded the guy. What irritates most is that he rose up to the hype as ‘Cliffy B’, as if it were some sort of brand name.
With the Gears 2 announcement he pranced around, declaring the new game to be “bigger and far more badass”. He generally walked the walk; Cliffy-B’d the Cliffy-B, if you will.
What followed, understandably, was a huge flurry of ridicule. (Check out some of the comments here, for instance). Even an anonymous Twitter-er (is that the term?) got in on the act a few months later, and the ridicule continues today. All because he became enamored with his own ego.
Of course, he had to shake the flaming somehow, and he tried a couple of months later…but that’s for tomorrow. The point remains that he got wrapped up in himself and charged about with a chainsaw on stage. Please, Cliff, have some dignity in future, but for now your moment of lame at GDC is in at #74 in our Top 100 Moments of 2008.
