Thanks to Tycho and Gabe, from Penny Arcade, I have been kept up to date on all of the G4 crap that I don’t care about. I was informed through many emails what X Play’s GOTY nominees and final pick were. Now, we at SG thought they were going to pick Gears of War 2 since Sessler and Morgan’s verbal felatio of Cliffy B is known far and wide. Were we right?
Like most occasions… no.
Fable 2, they picked Fable 2. Fable fricking 2. What in the wide world of sports would lead anyone to pick that game as game of the year with MGS4, Fallout 3 and other great titles clearly outclassing Fable 2 in every way.
The worst part? Fable 2 didn’t even win X-Play’s best RPG of 2008. Nope. Fallout 3 won that honor. How does a game not win it’s own category, yet be GOTY?
The choice was so bad that they were called out by Attack of The Show. And then the fictional drama led up to a climax of two nerds arguing about Fable 2. No one cared. Most, felt icky.
The funny thing is that for that horrible pick, Sessler was promoted to a high position at G4. It’s nice how that works.
X-Play’s GOTY abortion and the retardation that followed makes it #63 on our Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2008.

RIght:
1) There was NO botchup, The RPG elements of Fallout 3 won the RPG catagory and the other elements of Fable 2 won GOTY. Why can’t you get it into your heads? It is possible for a game to win a catagory and NOT win GOTY.
2) Fable 2 deserves GOTY way WAY WAY over Fallout 3, sorry but that game is dead.end.BORING. At a glance it looks good but when you delve deep it just becomes a boring pile of repeated textures. The whole “ooo his head exploded” lasts for about 5 minutes before you realise VATS its another form of invincibility.
3) The whole “why was Fable 2 GOTY but not game of its catagory” argument was NOT because of that, people were angry (especially Lono) that their boring game Fallout 3 didn’t win GOTY.
Is that a Zombie next to him in that picture? AHHHH! Scared!
Was I the only person that ignored the debate and was staring at Olivia Munn?
God, are you guys KIDDING me? Just let it rest.
A game DOESN’T have to win it’s category to be GOTY. I don’t know why it’s so hard for some people to understand.
But at least that was Lono’s main beef with the pick. He’s said repeatedly that he didn’t care that Fable won. The worst thing about this article is that it has the “How dare they pick Fable 2 over something like MGS4″ overtone. It’s an opinion. Not everyone thinks that MGS or GoW2 are gifts from god. At least TRY to hide the bias.
One more thing. Would we even be having the discussion if it were the other way around? If Fallout won GOTY and Fable won best RPG?

Yeah, I suppose I have been acting like a total d*ck so I will tone that down, but I do have legitimate concerns with some recent content and this lands smack dab in the middle of it. If Dave didn’t actually write this post or their are other circumstances I am unaware of, then ignore the following complaints.

Well a quick glance at Dave’s gamercard I can see that he hasn’t put a single minute into Fable 2, but still considers himself an expert on it’s quality. He also hasn’t touched the campaign for Gears 2 but that doesn’t stop him from anointing different games over it. Maybe he can correct me and clarify that he has played these games to completion, but something tells me that he hasn’t. Hopefully I am wrong.
Now tell me exactly how Dave is presenting a legitimate case arguing against Fable 2 as game of the year, when he hasn’t even played it?
@Cadaver Dog: Well to be fair, I haven’t played either game yet either. But I’ve seen plenty of people talk about how good Fable is and how much fun they have with it. So when I read Dave talking about it like it’s the worst game ever, I was a little surprised. It would be different if Fable was known for sucking.
Dave, you don’t get to act superior to X-Play because they didn’t pick a game you like as GOTY.
@Kira Blaize: W.T.F. You judge Sarcastic Gamer for being annoyed at a stupid, stupid mistake which should have got somebody there fired, even though you haven’t played either game? Sure, you make it known that you haven’t, but that doesn’t give you any reason to judge Dave. Granted, Fable 2 is a great game but it did NOT deserve game of the year.
