Fanboys – The worst thing to happen to video games since Superman 64.

It all started over a little game you might have heard of called LittleBigPlanet. Sony had been hyping this game for years as their flagship title, which automatically meant that all the PS3 fanboys would treat it as the second coming of JC himself and the Savior of the struggling PS3, while the Xbots would tear it down, no matter how good it really is.

This hyping behavior upset the balance in the fanboy force, so the Xbot Army decided to take action. Their “brilliant” war strategy was to pull all the 360 fanboys together, log on to Metacritic.com and give LBP the lowest score possible, as many times as possible.  They were able to pull this off because of Metacritic’s lackluster filtering system for reviews.  Basically, all you had to provide to rate a game was an arbitrary email address.

So, did PS3 fanboys turn the other cheek and be the bigger men? Of course not, because then they couldn’t call themselves fanboys! They all decided to retaliate by doing the same to Microsoft’s flagship title of the year, Gears of War 2. Thing is, Gears of War 2 was still two weeks away from even being released!

Thankfully Metacritic has changed their user review policies so that something like the Great User Review War of 2008* can’t happen again and teaching us to only look at cumulative critic score is why it comes in at #34 on our Top 100 Gaming Moments.
*Unfortunately no fanboys were killed during the war.
