Everyone knows the name of World of Warcraft. Not everyone loves it, but over 10 million people play it right now. Whenever a new competitor in the MMO genre hits the market, it’s instantly compared to World of Warcraft and judged accordingly. Warhammer Online is one of those games that is similar in many ways to the behemoth that is WoW, but different enough to change the pacing and structure of the game.

The reason why Warhammer is on this list, is because it worked. Read the rest, after the jump.

Warhammer Online probably isn’t going to end up ‘killing’ WoW, but when you compare the numbers against previously released MMO’s to come out in the past couple years, it’s definitely doing better than any of those. Warhammer was last announced to have 700k active subscribers, and if you look at Lord of the Rings: Online, another recent MMO, they topped off at 300k subscribers.

While it’s nowhere close to Warcraft’s millions, it’s nice to see another Fantasy MMO surviving on the market. Giving players options is never a bad thing.

Surviving against WoW while doing something different is why Warhammer Online is #30 in our top 100 gaming moments of 2008.
