Choice.  Free will.  It’s what open world and RPG style video games strive for.  In Fallout 3, in perhaps the first time in a video game, places the fate of an entire city in your hands. The choice you make in the game changes the whole story in aVERY real way.

Your choice is simple.  Destroy the city of Megaton, or save it?  What did you do? Well,  I blew it the hell up and it was glorious. I’ve got video of it, after the break for all of you “heroes” that saved the decrepit denizens of Megaton.

How do you NOT choose to destroy Megaton in a nuclear blast?  How awesome was that.  If you played the goody two-shoes, here’s what you missed:

Here’s how it looks in the daytime, with some video of what Megaton looks like afterward:

The destruction of Megaton was a real quandry for the player.  Destroying Megaton would cut you off from a main hub, where you’d developed relationships with people there and earned a pretty nice discount on equipment from the local trader, not to mention the varios side-quests you could pick upl.  On the other hand, you get to blow the M-Effing hell out of the whole city and bomb it back to the stone age.

For giving you real choice in Fallout 3, blowing the crap out of Megaton in a glorious fireball lands squarely at number 12 on our Top 100 Gaming Moments of 2008!

      Tee-hee. I blowed up megaton.

It was a lot of fun though. I was wondering what I missed, but I guess not much!

I haven’t blown it up BUT I did go on a rampage and systematically killed everyone in town. After saving beforehand. Let’s just say the town doctor was a little too cocky with me. And then… well the town paid the price.

I armed the bomb, and then killed everyone in town for their stuff, because I was a low level, you see. I was like Anakin Skywalker in that town.
After the slaughter, I piled them all up at the top of the hill,in front of the gate. After appreciating the size of it, I circled around with a minigun, cutting off limbs and heads, only to grenade it and watch the mess fly off. And then I ran day and night to Tenpenny Tower (more like Sauron’s Tower, amirite?) and blew it to kingdom come.

And now I miss Megaton. I miss the people. :’(

I think it’s worth mentioning that there is a tangible reward for blowing up Megaton: your own suite in Tennypenny Tower. I mean, it has clean, radiation-free water…how do you beat that?

Dang Yeti, that is a heck of a story.

My first character, I saved it. Sure, the free room and little quests and all was great, but…

My second character, I blew it up, and boy, was it worth it. There are so many better sidequests outside of Megaton :P

OR… and this is a big OR. Do all of the side quests in Megaton, raid everyone’s house, AND then blow it up :)
