Sarcastic Gamer’s Game of the Year is…

December 5th, 2008 at 10:00 am · 72 Comments

What a year 2008 has been.  Great PS3 games, crappy Wii games, a resurgence in PC gaming and an explosion of RPG’s on the Xbox 360.  There’s been a ton of great games that have been released on every platform.  Unfortunately, as Connor McCloud would say, there can be only one…

There’s only one Game of the Year.  Chances are that you’re gonna disagree with our pick.  We’re okay with that.  Find out, after the jump!

A person’s Game of the Year is just that, the individuals personal choice for Game of the Year.  We have a great cross section of gamers that devote their time and energy to Sarcastic Gamer. We all have opinions and we definitely like to share those opinions.  There’s no way we could all agree on one Game of the Year, so, we’re gonna change it up. A Game of the Year pick is a very personal thing.  It’s governed by what games you’ve played, what games you haven’t played, what systems you own and what your personal preferences are in gaming.  Doc isn’t a big RPG fan, Rothbart dislikes Multiplayer games, PMPB has an irrational fear of Zombies…

You get the idea.

So, instead of picking one game that represents the entire site, I’m just going to let you read each SG crew member’s GOTY and let them explain it for themselves.

Let’s let our newest crew member, 8bitBass give his pick first.

My choice for game of the year for 2008 is Metal Gear Solid 4. I purchased the PS3 in order to play this game and I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, I was roped into one of the most intense, cinematic and emotional video game experiences I have ever seen. MGS4 has set the standard for how cinematic games should be made for this generation and those to come. I could gush on and on about the fight scenes, the boss battles, voice acting, extended cut-scenes and movies, epic and satisfying story-line and novel and innovative economy/ shop system but you get the gist.

MightyMutt: Fallout 3.

The game I looked forward to the most didn’t disappoint. Real immersive gameplay, in a well realized gritty & decayed post nuclear landscape. You know it’s a good game when you can’t wait to play through it again. Blowing up Megaton stands as my outstanding moment in gaming this year.

Havok: BioShock (PS3)

If I had to compare BioShock to a fictional animal, it would be a fire-breathing orca…with wings. I heard that Macaulay Culkin wears a copy of the disc around his neck to ward off evil spirits. The actor has reportedly never played Wii Music. Alright, I can’t confirm that last bit, but I can tell you that BioShock is one of the best first-person shooters I have ever played. The tremendous narrative, impressive graphics and addictive gameplay combine to create an experience that is one of a kind. There is plenty of gunplay for FPS enthusiasts, but enough item collection and exploration to please fans of adventure games. I spent countless hours simply wandering around Rapture’s dilapidated halls. And no, I wasn’t lost. I was simply admiring the beautiful dystopia

GTA IV, because its the best

    • Yamster, Dave, and I seemed to get the pick correct! *thumbs up*

    • Lono says:

It was a very close second for me.

      FarCry 2
      FarCry2
      The second comming of farcry
      FarCry2

    • Boo says:

I am guessing Fable II, but I do not own a XBox360 so I have not got a clue if it is really good. :x

In any case, Fallout 3 was pretty cool, but at least on the PC it was not half as awesome as everyone claims it to be.
Having grown up with FPSs, the shooting in this game was killing me. It was so epically lacking. It does not care how well you aim. If your skill is low, you will not hit. If your skill is 100, you can aim a foot or two next to your target and still hit. -__-’

FarCry2 did not astound me at all, either. Call of Duty: World at War was the better when it comes to Shooters.

      So I think Fable 2 was the best of the lot. This year was not really overwhelming though. ;_;

    • MGS4. Period. No debate for me.

    • Kwangoski says:

My vote goes to Mirror’s Edge. As far as I’m concerned, it’s great fun, well designed and it’s just been a breath of fresh air to me!

    • PopTrogdor says:

MGS4, for reasons I’ve written in the Forum Version of this that Lono put up :P it was an essay then, so I’m not going to write why again now :D

    • The Cod says:

      I really don’t know.
I have a copy of Far Cry 2 waiting to be played, and a copy of GTA IV unopened, which I recieved today, and a copy of Gears 2, which I’ve played for a few days. I had a blast with MGS4, but didn’t buy the game, and I’ve missed out on a few titles that could be my GOTY, but probably not. Force Unleashed is solid, but not my GOTY.

But based on my personal enjoyment, versatility, graphic quality, entertainment value, control system, gameplay, single player expandability, multiplayer size and online mode, I’m gonna have to say…

      Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09.

      No joke.

This game does everything that a sports game should. From the very first Tiger Woods game for the PC, to the latest copy for next gen, it has never disappointed me (apart from maybe 06…) but TWPGA 09 has impressed me on many levels, and I’ve found myself far more addicted and immersed in this game than any other game out this year (apart from possibly Bioshock for ths PS3, but I’m still for TW).

It’s innovative online mode, which includes simultaneous play, one of the few things missing from this series, EA Sports Gamernet, which provides a fantastic new way of playing the game, thus expanding the game’s possibilities and aspects, and keeping me challenged, the many, many single player modes, each of which have their own unique way of making the game entertaining, and the endless amount of online content to play, all together, create a game, that for me, has me enjoying my gaming time non-stop. Even in frustration at my attempts to maximise my created character, I am still enjoying myself.

The game paves the way and sets the standards for sports games on their way. It has taken leaps and bounds, and EA, surprisingly, have got this game exactly on the money, and it hits all the right buttons.

      Graphically stunning too.

      That’s my nomination.

    • Caelas says:

Fallout 3 tied with Left 4 Dead. The sheer depth of the single player experience in Fallout is second to none, and left for dead is the perfect multiplayer game top couple it. As for GTA 4 I have only played it once at a friend’s house, and really enjoyed it. I base my GOTY picks on the amount of fun, interest, and depth. Atmosphere speaks worlds, and although every game has its shortcomings, I think fallout deserves the crown.

    • Eddiemilz says:

      MGS 4 for me :)

      What a phenomenal game

    • Jolley says:

I thought it through and I choose Metal Gear Solid 4. I am not a big PlayStation 3 fan at all! I seem to pick holes in everything they do but there has always been one game in my heart that I have truly loved through out the years and thats the metal gear solid franchise. I got every special edition of every game I would go days just playing the game amercing myself in it (My personal favourite is MGS2, sure you play as radian alot but the story for that game was brilliant and at the time that was amazing graphics that they were pumping out). Yes this year there has been Gears of war 2 my favourite online shooter and LBP, which I love despite the boredom that follows with long periods, but something shined about metal gear solid 4 maybe the amazing graphics maybe all the inside jokes that I got from all the past Metal gear solid games it certainly wasn’t the multilayer :D . I enjoyed every minute of that game and the replay ability from the single player makes up for an average multilayer.

So yeah I loved the game, I could talk about it constantly (which I realise is pretty sad). Even if I haven’t touched it in a month or 2 I still remember all my feeling well playing that game and if anything can top that it has to be a game of the decade because I don’t think anything can.

      MGS4

A bit of a weird choice for me cause I hated playing the previous MGS, I didn’t even play 4; but I made dang sure to head over to my friends place to watch him play it and find out how the story of Sanke ended.

Yamsters is spot on in his reason why its GOTY.

    • Farko says:

MGS4, the crew have summed it up nicely. i played every MGS game, and even the metal gear (they came with MGS3 subsistance)

its great just thinking about how the game evolved and continued to innovate as it progressed.

    • Lono says:

We received over 75 entries in the forums. I’ll post some of those as well.

    • EzyLee says:

I am going to have to fence sit on this one because there are two ways I see in measuring game of the year.

The first I am giving to LittleBigPlanet, base on innovation and HYPE! This is the only game that has ever made my mouth water even before it was released. The gameplay is super fun and it is the only game in my collection that my girl can play along with me. So on that basis of innovation, getting the little kid on xmas eve feeling and getting people who aren’t in to games… in to games. I am giving LittleBigPlanet my 2008 Game of the Year.

Okay, here is the other part… We play games to death when they come out. We don’t sleep until we beat the game… then we put it on the shelf to collect dust and move on to the next game. Call of Duty: World at War is an awesome game in story mode. The reason why I am giving it Game of the Year is because I will be playing this game half way through 2009 because of the awesome multi player factor that is common to the Call of Duty games. COD WAW may not be the BEST game, but it is a value for money game that will keep me on the PS3 and that is why I am also giving this game, 2008 Game of the Year.

    • Apex8 says:

Gears of war 2, it is not only my GOTY it is my favorite game of all time

    • fotios says:

      fallout 3

game i waited for for the whole year

      didnt disappoint in any area

i can enjoy just watching other people play it and see how they do

made you believe that it was all possible and that some way, you could survive and do whats right

    • mr flamethro says:

I’m sorry, but although I am a big Rock Band player, it’s kind of ironic that Animathias picked RB2 for its “amazing track list” the same week that they decided to put the Naked Brothers Band on DLC.

Still, RB2 is an awesome game, and besides that, the track list is excellent.

    • randomperson says:

Gears of War 2, I think that’s all I can say for a game with such a compelling storyline, and possibly the best graphics of any Xbox 360 game on the market.

    • Damian says:

MGS4 here too. MGS1 got me interested in games again after years of steering clear. I can forgive all the ridiculous plot stuff… in fact I don’t think it would be the same without it now. I even love the way it descends from the heavily gameplay-oriented bit at the start (by far the best of any MGS game so far) into a sequence of set pieces. You couldn’t do that in every game… but as a one-off there’s nothing like it.

      I am not an idiot!

    • Edthefreak says:

      Left 4 Dead
I already put my reasons pretty much in the thread so I’ll just end with…
      “Imma Firin’ ma BOOMER!!”

    • Butterz says:

Personally, I would probably pick Fallout. It was just so immersive, I have already beaten it once, and I’m playing through again now.

    • PaynTrainSG says:

      Frawlz IS an idiot.

I’d have to say that since we can’t necessarily pick BioShock for GOTY for a second year, I’d give best looking to Gears 2, Multiplayer to Left 4 Dead, Best New Concept for Mirror’s Edge, best Single Player to MGS4, and overall GOTY goes to Mirror’s Edge.

    • A Rabid Moose says:

      Left 4 Dead. But If it’s a face-off between MGS4 and Fallout 3, I’d go with MGS4.

    • DanteUY says:

      MGS4. Hands down.
As I wrote on a review I made for another site (but in spanish):

“I remember the first time I saw Mario with a tail or when Psycho Mantis moved my joystick with his mind, how sad I was when Sephiroth killed Aeris or when Delita murdered Ramza´s sister…my first Epona´s riding or the first time I run towards a Colossi. There are games that leaves a mark on us and are those games we remember as “the best games we ve ever played”(as unfair as that sentence can be with the other gems that have seen the light of day) . Each and everyone of us have his/her own Top Ten.
Well….my list has just been updated.

A lot of time and things have come and gone andSnake has shown the world why he is one of the most important characters on this industry.
And he couldnt ve possibly had a better good bye.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is, by far, the best game this gen so far, and easily one of the best games ever made.
And as far as I am concerned, the best game Ive ever played.”

    • cell989 says:

      MGS4 by a long shot

    • Vernon says:

I’ll have to go with Dead Space. Not because no one picked it, but because it was the only I wanted to buy and actually enjoyed throughout. Plus only game to actually make me buy an other kind of media for it (the comics and movie).

    • Tsjarlie says:

I’ve played each of the games selected by Sarcastic Gamer and would have to say MGS4 is also my game of the year.

I felt like standing up and giving a round of applause when the final credits came up.

    • SHaDoW xX says:

      Fallout 3.

    • Kevinoter says:

I thought last year was tough in picking my GOTY. This year is just as difficult. It’d be much easier if we were going by genre.

Overall, I’d say that the most complete game this year and the game that deserves GOTY is Gears of War 2.

The main reason is that there is something for everyone in this game (assuming you’re a shooter fan). Great single player experience, great co-op campaign, Horde, Multiplayer, Bots(for those who don’t have Live, which is ridiculous if you own a 360), and did I say Horde?

It’s amazing how much of an improvement this game is over the first and how great it is to have a cover system that works so well in a shooter…especially with the aggressively elusive AI. Of course I’m a huge shooter fan so…

However, if we go by genres, here is my list for GOTY:

      RPG – Fallout 3
      Shooter – GOW2
      Action/ Adventure – MGS4
Racing/ PSN download – Wipeout HD
      Live Arcade – Braid

    • nick10234 says:

Far Cry 2 and Left 4 Dead are mine.

    • sink257 says:

I’ll go for GOTY by genre (PC only)

      RPG = Fallout 3
      FPS = L4D
      Action/Adventure = Far Cry 2
      RTS = World in Conflict

      In a special mention,
      Footy = PES 2009
Game with most mass appeal = GTA IV

All I have to say is that I’ve noticed an unsettling bias towards the PS3 in the media lately… or more accurately since they released the damn thing…

Metal Gear Solid 4. Ive never seen any other game come CLOSE to Metal Gear Solid 4… MGS4 is just INSANE. Your RIGHT IN THERE! Freaking awesome, if you haven’t played it, please do. You will be shocked…

So Metal Gear Solid 4 – From me, TigerStyle

Wow… Yamster pretty much summed it up for me, i was 9 when i first played MGS (i had the original NES MG game but that’s different)

Is it strange that i got chills while reading the MGS4 picks and reasons? All were basically what i felt and it seemed odd to me.

    • Nexus_ says:

      Fallout 3
The most addictive, time sucking SOB. Already reached maximum 20th level and still haven’t seen most of the game. That spells GOTY for me…

    • Mark says:

I wish it would count as a 2008 game, due to the DLC packs and updates making it totally different than on release, but my nominee would be WarHawk. How much fun is it possible to have for under £30 including 3 new maps, vehicles etc. This game is great, and I would recommend it to every PS3 owner.
My 2008 game for GOTY, Burnout Paradise. I’m still playing and replaying it, still enjoying some of the best developer support in the business.
Take me down to the Paradise City, Baby!

    • caffeinedisaster says:

      Rock Band 2.

and Crackdown (I know it was released last year, but it’s so damn fun it wins this year……that……and I didn’t play it until I got my 360 this year.)
